The anticipation for Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday is at an all-time high. A movie that has been in the works for two years in its current iteration (and much longer than that in its original Kang Dynasty form), it will see the beginnings of the end for the Multiverse Saga. The Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced the concept back in 2021 when it launched that saga and it has all been building towards this moment, with its 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars set to wrap it all up.
The biggest selling point behind this one (other than the star-studded Marvel cast, that is) is the return of Robert Downey Jr.. He isn't playing Iron Man this time, but the franchise's new villain Victor von Doom - a.k.a. the legendary Marvel Comics villain otherwise known as Doctor Doom. And, having taken center stage in the teasers and trailers for the upcoming movie, it's safe to say that the anticipation, excitement, and awe is all warranted.
That being said, a new teaser trailer features previously-released footage which highlights that Doom will be even more intimidating than before.
New Avengers: Doomsday teaser replaces Doctor Doom's powers in a terrifying way
Marvel Studios has unveiled a brand new teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday and it features an unexpected change to Doctor Doom's powers. The clip is primarily a PSA teaser designed to tell MCU fans to silence their phones in movie theaters when watching the film (with cameo appearances from the Avengers themselves, who are sitting in the movie theaters watching it), but it does reuse some of the same footage from the previous trailer. And, well, it looks quite different.
Opening with that now-infamous clip of Thor attempting to use Stormbreaker on Doctor Doom, only to have the attack blocked by just two fingers from Victor, it also features the moment in which the villain swats Stormbreaker away and sends Thor flying with a charge of power. However, the power itself is completely different to how it first looked. Watch the teaser trailer yourself to see it:
While the initial clip portrayed Doom's power blasts as a traditional green and black charge, the more recent teaser has upgraded those blasts exponentially - opting to cover them in what looks like a heap of black dots. As The Direct points out, this is a nod to the iconic Kirby Krackle effect created by the legendary Jack Kirby in the various comic books he wrote for Marvel Comics over the years. It's a neat effect that adds a level of mysticism and mystery to Doom as a character, but it's also the first time that we have seen these effects employed in an MCU movie - really setting Doom's powers apart from everyone else in the franchise.
The idea of Doom's powers being shrouded in a ghostly web of black dots suits the character down to the ground. Victor von Doom is a genius who will stop at nothing to exact revenge over the loss of his loved ones (which was seemingly caused by a multiversal incursion), so it would make complete sense for him to have summoned all kinds of dark forces to empower him. And that might explain why his powers look so much more supernatural than any other hero or villain's abilities - witches aside of course.

Speaking of witches, Doom will have recruited Latverian Witches to help him achieve his goals, so it's really quite possible that they are the ones channeling all of that magic and power into him. If that's the case, we should expect the almighty Marvel Comics villain to show us all the true extent of his powers with some disastrous consequences for Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Doom has been at the center of the Marvel Studios marketing for Avengers: Doomsday since the very beginning, so it's no surprise to learn that he will be even more powerful, spooky, and unearthly than initially suggested. If the upgraded magic is a sign of things to come, audiences are in for one heck of an unstoppable antagonist for the Avengers to compete against. And every good Avengers movie needs one of those!
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
