We are just three months away from Avengers: Doomsday and the countdown clock is continuing to tick down. The star-studded affair from Marvel Studios features a who's who of veterans, stars, and legends from the Marvel Cinematic Universe's past, present, and future, and that is undoubtedly only scratching the surface - because, as Marvel fans know, the MCU is always full of unannounced surprises.
What awaits the multiverse in this one? Destruction as a horde of incursions threaten the very existence of each and every world that features a Marvel superhero to make it to the screen over the course of the past few decades. Yes, considering that the Multiverse Saga has reintroduced a multitude of pre-MCU Marvel veterans, that likely includes the worlds of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, the original X-Men, and so many more. And the person responsible for this destruction is the Multiverse Saga's new villain Doctor Doom.
The trailers have showcased that Doom is not to be trifled with and that was made very clear in the newest one of all. After all, he officially brings back one of the greatest threats to any Marvel hero ever.
The X-Men's greatest enemies return in new Avengers: Doomsday trailer
Marvel Studios officially unveiled the brand new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday at the D23 Entertainment Showcase event and it understandably - and very quickly - sent the internet into a complete, total meltdown. The new clip spotlighted Robert Downey Jr.'s new villain Doctor Doom, highlighting how the Fantastic Four once considered him one of their closest friends. And that makes his inevitable, all-powerful heel turn that much more fightening - something that Thor's monologue in the first trailer made clear was frightening to even him.
However, the new teaser trailer also features the first official look at the returning Sentinels, confirming that the X-Men's biggest threats will be making their return to the silver screen (alongside the X-Men themselves) as Doom seemingly unleashes them on the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and indeed, the X-Men.

Ahead of the official marketing launch for Avengers: Doomsday, there were a number of leaks that suggested that the three teams of iconic Marvel heroes could battle the Sentinels in a wasteland-like area. It turns out that those leaks were incredibly accurate as the second trailer features scenes from that apparent scene, with Doom raising Sentinels after Thor attempted to take him down with his super-charged axe Stormbreaker (but to no avail).
As longtime X-Men fans will know, the Sentinels are the Mighty Mutants' biggest threat. Designed by humans using the Master Mold (who eventually turns against his creators), the androids have one single purpose: Destroy mutants at all costs. Some of them can mimic the X-Men's powers or shield themselves completely from them, making them extremely difficult for even Omega-level mutants like Storm to stop. And, unfortunately, the X-Men don't have Storm on their team in Avengers: Doomsday.
Interestingly, while they don't particularly target other super-powered or skilled individuals (such as gods like Thor or trained assassins like Yelena Belova), they will be doing just that in Avengers: Doomsday due to the fact that they are all opposing Doctor Doom. And with one of the single greatest threats any known super-powered indivsuals at his disposal, it's going to be a long day for one of the largest ever super-teams to ever grace the silver screen.
The Sentinels have appeared in live-action before, starring in the 20th Century Fox X-Men movie series, particularly 2014's critically-acclaimed X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, their design was drastically different, with the powers-that-be of that film series opting for a more streamlined, sleeker look. It certainly made them look more terrifying but the truth is that fans have been longing to see the larger, more square-like, and robotic androids from both the Marvel Comics and X-Men: The Animated Series (as well as sequel series X-Men '97) make their way onto the big screen. Now they get to see that happen after all this time.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
