The Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading into the end of its ongoing Multiverse Saga, and many questions remain about the next chapter in the franchise. Once Doom is defeated, the day is saved, and everyone goes back to living a peaceful life (surely without any significant deaths, right?), audiences worldwide will be stepping into uncharted territory. We know an X-Men movie helmed by Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier will be released after Avengers: Secret Wars, but Marvel hasn't revealed any official plans beyond that point.
Rumors indicate that supernatural characters like Blade, Moon Knight, and Werewolf by Night will all have new standalone projects before coming together in a Midnight Sons crossover. Furthermore, it seems Marvel also wants to create a street-level crossover where heroes like Spider-Man, Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and more join forces to stop the Kingpin of Crime once and for all. But what about the next Avengers movie after Secret Wars? While such a project may still be a long way off, it seems the general concept behind it is already set.
Marvel is reportedly working on a new Avengers film titled Judgment Day; the Eternals will play a key part in it
According to insider James Mack, Marvel is working on adapting the A.X.E.: Judgment Day comic book storyline on the big screen once the Multiverse Saga is over. This comic series features three major groups of heroes throughout its run: the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Eternals (hence the A.X.E. acronym).
Despite having disappeared from the public eye after the release of their solo movie, the Eternals are rumored to make a comeback and act as a key pillar of the MCU's cosmic side moving forward. And now that the X-Men are under the Disney umbrella after the company acquired 20th Century Studios, all the pieces are in place for a Judgment Day adaptation.
The events of A.X.E.: Judgment Day begin when the mutants living in Krakoa make a groundbreaking discovery. They successfully transfer the consciousness of deceased colleagues into new bodies, effectively rendering mutantkind immortal. This new development doesn't sit well with the Eternals, who claim this form of immortality is also a form of excess deviation.
The Eternals are specifically programmed to put an end to the Deviants, so a conflict between them and the X-Men becomes inevitable. With war looming on the horizon, the Avengers join forces with some rogue members of the Eternals and a few X-Men. Together, they come up with a plan: What if they could resurrect the fallen Celestial whose body acts as the headquarters of Earth's Mightiest Heroes? Surely this godly being could order the Eternals to stop their all-out attack on mutantkind without any kind of secondary effect, right?

The Avengers successfully resurrect the Celestial known as The Progenitor, but this event quickly backfired. The Progenitor deemed humanity unworthy and gave all living beings on Earth only 24 hours to justify their existence, or else the whole world would be eradicated. As simple as that, Judgment Day came for the Avengers, Eternals, X-Men, and everyone else who wasn't even directly involved in this conflict to begin with, such as Spider-Man.
The introduction of the Eternals on the big screen came at the wrong time (and, quite frankly, we could say the same about other heroes like Moon Knight). After all, these characters made their debut only to be quickly set aside in favor of other multiversal storylines. In hindsight, it makes sense why all the heroes not directly involved in the overarching Multiverse Saga had to wait on the sidelines as Doom lays waste to the multiverse as a whole. But after the release of Avengers: Secret Wars, it will be the perfect time for the Eternals to jump back into action.
With a new generation of X-Men set to steal the spotlight as well, it would be the perfect opportunity for Marvel to create an adaptation of the Judgment Day comic book storyline. Granted, it is still early days, and it is always important to take any reports with a grain of salt. However, this rumored crossover might be the best chance to put the Eternals at the front and center of a big story and make them household names after their failed solo movie.
Meanwhile, all eyes are set on Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars to close out the Multiverse Saga with a bang and set the scene for even better things to come. So, let's hope the wait for these big crossovers proves to be worth it.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
