All sights are set on Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The double act will serve as the two-part conclusion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse Saga, closing one door to the franchise while simultaneously opening many others. That's what the evolution of the MCU is all about, and we have seen that in bucket-loads throughout this saga.

The Multiverse Saga was all about change, kicking off new chapters and wrapping up others. It also took us on some side-quests along the way as we checked out alternate universes with variants of our favorite heroes. But those weren't the only variants, as the franchise also saw a number of newer heroes take on mantles passed down by their successors. Yelena Belova officially took over the Black Widow mantle from her sister Natasha Romanoff and veteran Sam Wilson officially picked up the Captain America shield after earning the role as Steve Rogers' successor.

Now, as we head into Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel has officially brought in another successor. And, yet again, it's a family member of the original's.

Tommy Maximoff becomes the MCU's new Speedster, taking over from his uncle Quicksilver

Marvel Studios has finally introduced Tommy Maximoff into the MCU in VisionQuest, and he's already exhibiting those speedy abilities that his comic book counterpart is known for. In doing so, they have officially carried on the legacy of Tommy's uncle, Pietro Maximoff (a.k.a. Quicksilver). The son of Wanda Maximoff and Vision, heTommy is portrayed by Ruaridh Mollica in the Disney Plus series and he will play an important role in Vision's journey throughout the series.

The character had previously appeared as a child 2021's critically-acclaimed WandaVision, when Wanda created an idyllic, fictional life for herself, using her chaos magic to take over Westview in bringing it to life. His reintroduction as an adult now makes him the first speedster to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 11 years. The previous one was, of course, Pietro (Aaron Taylor Johnson), who was the twin brother of Wanda Maximoff. He made his one and only MCU appearance in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron in what we all thought was only the beginning of his story.

Although fans were excited to say the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver introduced into the MCU, they were subsequently shocked when the character was killed off in that same movie. His death came at the hands of Ultron who attempted to kill the Avenger Hawkeye (Hawkeye), with Quicksilver sacrificing himself to save the hero.

Fans have longed to see him return to the MCU in a bid to right that wrong but it has yet to happen - well, not officially at least. A variation of the character (or so we thought) resurfaced in WandaVision as Evan Peters played what appeared to be a variant of the hero (Peters previously portrayed an alternate version of Quicksilver known as Peter Maximoff in the X-Men movies, so we all did buy it for a moment considering that WandaVision kicked off the Multiverse Saga) but it would all turn out to be a track as ancient witch Agatha Harkness was toying with Wanda. That being sad, we did momentarily see him get to use his fake speedster powers and for a moment bond with Wanda‘s sons - with Tommy's speedster powers activating during Wanda's Hex, too.

Speaking of Agatha, it was her who helped Tommy's brother Billy - who has magical abilities like Wanda - place his brother's soul in another body, allowing Tommy to be reincarnated as an adult like he was (during the events of Agatha All Along). And, with that, Quicksilver's successor, Tommy himself, has found his way back into the MCU - officially this time.

Mollica's performance as Tommy has already been extremely well-received, with fans particularly excited to see him share the screen with Joe Locke's Billy. Alhough Marvel has yet to officially confirm whether the twin brothers will reunite in VisionQuest, the answer to that question already appears to be confirmed. And hopefully that means that the pair will get the chance to adapt their comic book backstory on the big and / or small screen.

Known as Speed and Wiccan, Tommy and Billy eventually go on to become members of the Young Avengers, searching for their mother Wanda and receiving guidance from their father Vision. As Billy is already asking questions about Wanda's fate in the MCU (where she was seemingly killed by Mount Wundgaore after sacrificing herself in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Tommy has officially crossed paths with Vision, the Maximoff Family Reunion may well be on the horizon sooner rather than later.

Regardless, seeing Tommy Maximoff come to life in the MCU, carrying on the speedster legacy of Pietro and setting the stage for the franchise's next chapter; it's all extremely fulfilling for fans who have been waiting for this moment for a very, very long time.
