Marvel star casts doubt on long-awaited Disney Plus series happening

We know little about the future of the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars, and a Marvel star cast even more doubt on the status of an upcoming rumored project.

We know very little about what plans are in store for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the end of the Multiverse Saga. While the superhero giant has four slots reserved for 2028, there haven't been any official announcements of what movies might be released during those dates. Furthermore, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the plan is to release two Marvel Disney+ shows per year moving forward. With that in mind, the question to ask is: What projects are being worked on behind the scenes?

Luckily for us, many reports have given us a good idea of what to expect moving forward. The supernatural side of the MCU will reportedly be at the front and center with characters like Moon Knight making their long-awaited comeback, while the X-Men are confirmed to have a movie of their own, too. But among the rumored titles, one that has generated a lot of excitement is a possible Champions show. After all, new heroes have to take the spot of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, so who better than the new blood to rise to the occasion? Unfortunately, one Marvel star hinted that the project might not come to fruition after all.

Hailee Steinfeld says she doesn't know anything about a Champions series

During an interview with Variety, Kate Bishop herself, Hailee Steinfeld, revealed that she doesn't know anything about the Champions show that is listed on her IMDb page: "I saw that! You’re telling me anyone can just update IMDb now? Because part of me was like, 'Is this someone random just throwing stuff out? Or someone who knows something?'".

As if that wasn't enough, Hailee also hinted that there are no concrete plans in store for Kate Bishop for the time being: "As for Marvel, I’m always waiting by the phone. I love that family. I’m so grateful to be a part of it. Anytime they need me, they know where to find me."

While this seems to paint a negative picture for a Champions series, it's important to note that Marvel actors rarely get to reveal what they are working on. Most of the time, they have to mislead audiences to preserve the surprise. After all, that's exactly what happened when Andrew Garfield insisted on multiple occasions that he wouldn't appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home (even though we all know how that story concluded).

Given that the post-credits scene of The Marvels hinted that Kamala Khan and Kate Bishop would gather a team, we know that Marvel intends for the Young Avengers/Champions to assemble. Furthermore, leaked concept art indicates that the team might come together as soon as during the events of Avengers: Doomsday. Knowing this, it's very likely that Hailee Steinfeld was simply trying to mislead us by making it seem that there are no immediate plans for the team to assemble.

Back in March, Nexus Points News reported that Rachna Fruchbom is set to write the Champions series, and that the line-up could consist of Cassie Lang, Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Kid Loki, Eli Bradley, Riri Williams, America Chavez, and Billy Maximoff. Furthermore, reliable Alex Perez stated that both Kate Bishop and Kamala Khan will be "co-leaders of the team" and that even if a 2027 release isn't set in stone, the show will surely happen.

At this point, it's all but confirmed that the Young Avengers are coming, and chances are that they will have a prominent role after the Multiverse Saga is over. Fortunately, it seems we won't have to wait long to finally see them in action. Avengers: Doomsday could give us our first glimpse of the team, and we couldn't be any more excited.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
