It goes without saying that Agatha All Along was one of the biggest hits of 2024. In case it does need saying, however, the Marvel Television series generated more buzz than the vast majority of the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows in recent years, had the world captivated during spooky season, and it was also the third-most-watched show on the Disney Plus streaming service of the year, amassing 2.2 billion minutes in viewing time.
Although it was designed as a miniseries, Marvel and Disney were so happy with it that there were reportedly talks of a second season. This theory is also supported by the fact that Marvel submitted the series to the comedy or musical categories during the awards season instead the Limited Series categories, implying that there could be more stories for Agatha Harkness in the near-future.
However, as reported by The Wrap, it appears that this won't be the case after all, as new comments from one of its stars suggest that it was always meant to be a one-season show.
Agatha All Along season 2 wasn't on the cards as Jac Schaeffer doesn't do second seasons
A second season of Agatha All Along is not on the cards it seems. According to series star Patti LuPone, who played Lilia Calderu on the show, Agatha All Along season 2 isn't happening simply because showrunner Jac Schaeffer doesn't do second seasons. Speaking to Andy Cohen on his podcast Andy Cohen Live!, the Broadway legend said when asked about another season:
"There won’t be one. Jac Schaeffer, the creator, came into my trailer and she said, ‘Patti, I’m just here to tell you that Lilia’s going to die,’ and I went, ‘But I wanted a second season.’"
One of the main reasons for Agatha's success was its powerful ensemble cast of characters, as the coven quickly became major fan-favorites. But Lilia Calderu wasn't the only one to die, as Sharon Davis, a.k.a. Mrs. Hart, and Alice Wu-Gulliver also perished on The Witches' Road. So, by that standing, it's hard to argue with the creative process here because a huge portion of the coven was indeed dead before the final episode's credits rolled - indicating that the show might not return.
But indications aren't everything, it seems. The show's parent series WandaVision very much gave miniseries, with a satisfying conclusion at the end of its nine-episode run that suggested there was more for Wanda Maximoff beyond Westview but that the show's adventures were done. But it turns out that there may have been more plans for another season once upon a time, according to LuPone, and that it was actually Schaeffer who said no.
"[Schaeffer] said, ‘I don’t do second seasons... She said, ‘They wanted me to do a second season of WandaVision and I didn’t.’ She said, ‘There’s too much to write,’ so she does one-offs and I’m really hoping and praying that someday I get to work with her again because she’s magic.”
The idea that a second season of WandaVision was ever on the table is really surprising because, as we just said, it appeared to conclude in a pretty definitive way. And honestly, looking back on how that show had Marvel fans all over the world hooked in 2021 with its core mystery, it would have been hard to recreate that magic a second time around. So, on that front, the decision not to do a sophomore run makes sense.
As for Agatha, there was definitely potential for a second season, and that still may come to fruition - albeit in a different series.
The story of Agatha All Along continues in one (potentially two) MCU spinoff series
Although Agatha All Along season 2 won't be happening, it is part of the MCU's WandaVision trilogy, serving as the second of three shows tied to the same story. The next installment will be the Vision series, currently titled Vision Quest, which will bring back WandaVision's Paul Bettany as the vibranium synthezoid attempts to remember who he once was. Now the White Vision, he was brought back by SWORD director Tyler Hayward to kill Wanda, but once he had his memories restored by the Vision that Wanda created as part of the Westview Hex, he ventured into the sky.
The belief is that the purpose of this trilogy is to reunite the Scarlet Witch with her family, bringing Vision and her boys, Tommy and Billy Maximoff, back together again. But the truth is that Vision Quest may not be the title to do that, as the story of the twins might need to take place in a series more closely related to Agatha All Along. And it sounds like that may be the case.
Ever since Agatha revealed that one of Wanda and Vision's sons, Billy Maximoff, a.k.a. Wiccan, had survived the Westview Anomaly, there have been whisperings of a Wiccan series that would serve as a sequel to Agatha All Along. Those have popped up alongside the rumblings of Agatha All Along season 2, with fans confused about which way the story might go. It turns out that both is an option here.
According to Marvel insider Alex Perez, the Wiccan spinoff and Agatha All Along season 2 are actually one and the same, with the idea being that Marvel Television produces a sequel series in which Agatha and Billy go on a quest to find Tommy. And the duo just doing that is pretty easy to imagine as the series concluded with the two heading out to find Billy's brother, who was reincarnated like Billy himself (with some help from Agatha).
With all of that in mind, it's highly likely that the adventures of Agatha Harkness and Billy Maximoff will continue in the future. Marvel is clearly committed to reuniting Wanda's family, but they are also laying the breadcrumbs for Billy - and potentially his brother Tommy (a.k.a. Speed) - to join the Young Avengers (who are reportedly set to star in their own project titled Champions). Those things can't happen without some kind of project to bridge the gap and allow he and Agatha to find Tommy in the first place.
Vision Quest will carry on the WandaVision story, but we could very well see that second Agatha spinoff come to fruition in the near-future. If anything, the apparent lack of a second season for Agatha All Along just reinforces the likelihood of it happening.
