Expectations are through the roof for the X-Men's first solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the movie's premiere is still a couple of years away, a recent rumor says that its script is already held in high regard.
Insider MyTimeToShineHello wrote on X that a source who read the script “had nothing but praise for it.” Not only that, this source added, "If Thunderbolts*, X-Men: First Class, Batman v Superman, and The Breakfast Club had a baby, it would be this."
It is too early to see if this is what audiences will see in the final cut. However, this alleged comparison of the film's script strongly hints at what fans can expect from director Jake Schreier's X-Men reboot.
X-Men sounds like a massive, political, teenage superhero origin story
Since the X-Men will make their debut, it makes sense for their solo film to resemble X-Men: First Class. This 2011 movie follows Professor X and Magneto as they form the first generation of X-Men and try to avert the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s.
This suggests that the MCU will depict the new team’s origins, albeit in the present day. Though First Class featured both Professor X and Emma Frost, the upcoming X-Men film's cast will include mutants like Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue, Angel, and Mister Sinister.
It’s also no surprise that Schreier’s X-Men film would be like his previous MCU movie, Thunderbolts*. The latter follows a group of flawed people with troubled, regretful pasts who join forces to save the world. Since mutants like Jean Grey don't have the happiest backstories, fans can expect the new X-Men film to focus on the characters confronting their inner demons as they try to become heroes.
Though it remains a divisive film, Batman v Superman stands out for merging superhero storytelling with modern politics. It showed how the world would react with fear if a being like Superman suddenly appeared, much like how people in Marvel Comics react to mutants.
Jean Grey already showed she could be a threat by possessing people and trapping much of New York City in a psychic field. Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Though the MCU had already introduced a handful of superheroes like Thor and the Hulk, tensions would only increase as more mutants like Jean popped up on the news.
Additionally, comparing the X-Men film to The Breakfast Club suggests that it will focus heavily on its younger characters, their teenage angst, and their newfound relationships with each other. Like The Breakfast Club, X-Men will see a bunch of troubled kids from different backgrounds as they form an unlikely team under the watchful eye of Professor X.
X-Men will kick off the MCU's Mutants Era
Overall, based on the rumor about the X-Men reboot's script, the movie will play a major part in launching the MCU's next big saga with the mutants at the forefront. Like Batman v Superman and X-Men: First Class, the movie will introduce a bunch of new heroes within the MCU while setting up a much bigger narrative.
Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige already told Variety that Jean Grey will play a "key role" in the MCU going forward. Once Jean comes together with the rest of the X-Men, the team seems geared to be the new face of the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars.
In addition, Mister Sinister is rumored to appear in multiple MCU projects after the X-Men reboot, according to MyTimetoShineHello. The film is already set to introduce a whole new team of heroes. However, it may also introduce Sinister as a recurring villain similar to Loki, Thanos, Kang, or Doctor Doom. Whether he will be the main villain of the Mutants Era remains to be seen.
Fans still have to wait two years to see the X-Men reboot for themselves. However, it sounds like Marvel plans to make it a huge, emotional debut for both the X-Men and the MCU's Mutants Era.
