Dread it, run from it, doom arrives all the same. Earth's Mightiest Heroes have fought plenty of devastating battles to date, but nothing compares with what's to come. Avengers: Doomsday is just around the corner, and it is set to shake the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. Heroes from across the entire multiverse are set to come together in one unprecedented crossover. But while we expect these protectors to work together for the greater good, that might ultimately not be the case.

Avengers: Doomsday will reportedly feature an explosive battle pitting the X-Men against Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Furthermore, it has been rumored that the movie's opening will showcase Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man fighting Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and other mutants. But why will the X-Men try to bring down any hero who crosses their path? Well, we finally have an answer, and it is heartbreaking.

The X-Men faced many incursions before Avengers: Doomsday and had to fight other heroes for their own survival

An incursion is the process by which two different universes clash with one another, destroying one (or possibly both) and killing millions in the process. We've seen the devastating results of these cataclysmic events in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but we're about to dive deeper into the tragedy in Avengers: Doomsday.

According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, the X-Men have lived through multiple incursions leading up to the events of Avengers: Doomsday. Each time, they had no choice but to erase the universe clashing into theirs, but not before having to fight the protectors of that opposing Earth. The X-Men have managed to survive so far, but they have sacrificed a lot. Now, they are "exhausted" and "broken," explaining why they don't hesitate to launch into battle at any sign of danger.

Let's suppose for a moment that the X-Men universe is on a collision course with the Earth in which Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man lives. That would explain why the wall-crawler fights Logan in the opening of Avengers: Doomsday. Besides, beloved actor Alan Cumming revealed that his character, Nightcrawler, will fight Mr. Fantastic. At this point, the X-Men vs Avengers battle is all but confirmed, and we finally know why it will happen.

The constant fighting between heroes might push some to consider supporting Doom's plan of unifying many fragments from different universes into one, creating Battleworld in the process. This would explain why Avengers: Doomsday will reportedly feature shocking superhero betrayals that fans won't see coming. After all, saving a few little pieces of the multiverse could be better than destroying entire worlds.

It has been reported that the final battle of Earth's Mightiest Heroes' upcoming adventure will feature many characters (including some that have yet to make their MCU debut) fighting in The Void. With that in mind, chances are that we won't see a proper team-up between heroes from different universes until the events of Avengers: Secret Wars and after the creation of Battleworld.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes first tasted defeat in Avengers: Infinity War because they couldn't come together when the world needed them the most. History seems cursed to repeat itself in Avengers: Doomsday, and we can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
