We all know how the story usually goes: The good guy faces the bad guy in an explosive showdown and, against all expectations, the hero manages to save the day. However, there are instances when things take an unexpected turn, the narrative diverts from its intended path, and the people who are supposed to be on the same side end up clashing with each other. We've seen heroes fight amongst themselves multiple times before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (looking at you, Captain America: Civil War), but the superhero giant might be looking to outdo itself soon.
Avengers: Doomsday is getting closer and closer. With every passing tick of the clock, we see the release of new teaser trailers that unveil the return of big heroes and learn about big leaks that indicate the highly anticipated crossover will be filled with unexpected twists and turns. One of the biggest rumors so far reveals that the Avengers and the X-Men will fight in a desperate attempt to save their respective universes. But as exciting as watching that battle would be, it could pale in comparison to another big hero versus hero moment that will happen in the movie, if a new tease is anything to go by.
Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man is teased to fight Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in Avengers: Doomsday
Superhero fans might be about to witness the nostalgic showdown of a lifetime. For years now, we've all wondered what it would've been like if Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man crossed paths with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, as the two are among the most popular and beloved superheroes to ever grace the big screen. Well, it appears we'll live in doubt no more, but you know what they say: Be careful what you wish for.

Renowned insider Daniel Richtman posted a cryptic picture depicting Wolverine and Spider-Man fighting on a snowy mountain. Given that Avengers: Doomsday is on the horizon, it isn't far-fetched to assume that such a shocking encounter might happen in Earth's Mightiest Heroes' upcoming adventure. Multiple reports had already indicated that the two heroes would meet in the highly anticipated crossover, but while fans assumed that they would join forces for the greater good, it seems that won't be the case (at least, not at first).
While far from being concrete evidence to support the rumor, it's important to address the release timing of Spider-Man & Wolverine. This comic book series was launched in 2025, and its first issues were all about Peter and Logan having major confrontations with each other. It even got to the point where the friendly neighborhood hero literally threatened to kill Wolverine, while the iconic mutant used his claws to savagely stab Peter and nearly kill him. Perhaps Marvel wanted fans to have the picture of the two heroes fighting fresh in their minds in anticipation of Avengers: Doomsday.
For quite some time now, it has been reported that Tom Holland's Spider-Man won't join Earth's Mightiest Heroes in their upcoming fight against Doom. But while neither Tom nor Andrew Garfield's iterations of the wall-crawler are expected to appear in the movie, Tobey Maguire is rumored to fill those spots. After all, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be the next big (and perhaps final) chapter for heroes we thought were long gone, such as variants of the X-Men from the Fox era.

On the other hand, it has been reported that Marvel intends for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to have a major presence in the MCU past Avengers: Secret Wars. Rumors suggest that he will even get his own solo project after the Multiverse Saga comes to an end. With that in mind, it isn't far-fetched to assume Logan will also play a key role in the two upcoming Avengers movies, especially now that licensing rights aren't a barrier separating big Marvel franchises anymore (unless Sony randomly decides to take Spidey away from the MCU, that is).
The original Secret Wars comic book storyline, released in 1984, was known for depicting many iconic heroes against each other as part of a big contest organized by the Beyonder. While the movie is more likely to adapt the events of the 2015 run, perhaps the core concept of good guys fighting themselves will remain on the big screen.
Actor Alan Cumming revealed that his character, Nightcrawler, will fight Pedro Pascal's Mister Fantastic. Coupled with all the rumors indicating that the Avengers will face the X-Men, it's easy to see a world where Spidey and Logan are forced to battle for the survival of their respective universes. Let's just hope that Peter and Logan eventually make amends and team up to fight against a horde of Doombots. One can only dream.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
