New Avengers: Doomsday trailer confirms Marvel dropped a major storyline

Victor von Doom's arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is imminent. The long-standing Fantastic Four villain is finally set to make his official MCU debut in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday (after a brief, uncredited cameo in The Fantastic Four: First Steps), with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise in the new, villainous role. To say that anticipation is at an all-time high would be a major understatement.

Avengers: Doomsday is the culmination of the franchise's ongoing Multiverse Saga, bringing together storylines that have been in motion for years for a two-part finale (with next year's Avengers: Secret Wars officially wrapping things up). However, it will mostly continue on storylines set up in recent installments such as Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It turns out, however, that the MCU will be dropping something of a divisive storyline - one that the new, extended Avengers: Doomsday trailer has seemingly confirmed.

New extended Avengers: Doomsday trailer confirms John Walker and Sam Wilson leave their history behind

A new version of the original Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer has surfaced online courtesy of ScreenX - the format which features an incredible, three-wall screen that opens up any movies you view on them. As a result, fans are treated to new, extended looks of each of the visuals in the 15-second teaser trailer with opened up backgrounds that help provide extra context to the film (and each of the events that are happening within it).

While it looks awesome seeing a new look at Doctor Doom holding off Thor's lighting-powered axe with his fingers or a greater look at Shuri's Black Panther teaming once again with M'Baku, there is another opened-up look that provides even more context to the movie. And that is the shot from Wakanda in which Shuri, M'Baku, and their army meet with the Fantastic Four and a group of Avengers, In the standard trailer, we see The Thing, Sue Storm, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, and Ghost all standing together. The opened-up ScreenX version confirms that John Walker, a.k.a. US Agent, will also be present for that monumental moment.

The fact that Walker is there, however, is pretty telling. After all, this faction of Avengers shown in the Doomsday trailer consists of two very different teams: Sam Wilson's original reformed Avengers and Yelena Belova's New Avengers. While Danny Ramirez's Falcon is on the former, Bucky, Ghost, and Walker are all on the former, having joined up as a team officially in Thunderbolts*.

But the post-credits scene of that film made it clear that there was tension between the two teams. Sam, the new Captain America, had been authorized to rebuild the Avengers (which presumably leads to heroes like Black Panther and Shang-Chi joining the team), while Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine publicly announced the New Avengers' arrival at a press conference (after her attempt to kill all of them failed).

While it became pretty clear that the two teams were going to have to work together to stop Doctor Doom, the lack of a movie in between to explore that dynamic really left us wondering if they could really bury the hatchet. After all, we have never seen both factions on-screen together. We know that Sam likes to play things by the book while the New Avengers are known to have a more chaotic, off-the-wall approach.

Walker's inclusion, however, suggests that they will attempt to put the past behind them for a greater purpose. After all, he and Sam have a long and complicated history. Remember, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Walker was declared the official Captain America after Steve Rogers' retirement as the hero before his dishonorable discharge from the role when he killed a criminal in broad daylight using the iconic shield. That led to a life of crime for Valentina before he ultimately found his way to the Thunderbolts - forming the New Avengers.

By having Walker side with Sam Wilson's Avengers (alongside his New Avengers teammates), Marvel is officially moving on from one of the Multiverse Saga's most controversial storylines (and perhaps even forming one of the biggest Avengers teams possible as a result).

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
