10 new comic book picks of the week (September 11)
By Mark Lynch
This week, a new X-Men: From the Ashes title begins as Wolverine’s newest arc starts while Skybound’s Transformers first arc ends. And Absolute Power continues with a couple of must-read tie-ins. Let's not waste any more time and get into the pick of the week.
Wolverine No. 1 (Pick of the week)
- Writer: Saladin Ahmed
- Artist: Martin Coccolo
The description says an old enemy will reemerge as a new one. If the cover of Wolverine issue No. 2 is a hint, the Wendigo is back. If that’s not enough there’s a brutal fight between Sabretooth and Wolverine during their early days. Plus Saladin Ahmed (Daredevill and Miles Morales: Spider-Man) is a fantastic writer. He'll make this one of Wolverine’s best arcs.
Absolute Power: Task Force VII
- Writer: Stephanie Williams
- Artist: Khary Randolph
One of Amanda Waller’s Amazos attacks Themyscira for helping the heroes (Absolute Power No. 3). Even if the Amazo has the powers of other heroes, it's still battling the Amazons. There’s no way it comes out of this without being severely damaged maybe destroyed.
Green Lantern No. 15
- Writers: Jeremy Adams and Phillip K. Johnson
- Artists: Fernando Pasarin and Montos
Hal Jordan needs to power his Green Lantern Ring. In his way are Amanda Waller’s troops. So what does he do? He uses the Batwing (which he certainly didn’t ask to borrow). Green Lantern No. 15 will be full of quips and action and and Hal regaining Green Lantern’s might.
Uncanny X-Men No. 2
- Writer: Gail Simone
- Artist: David Marquez
Uncanny X-Men No. 1 proved that the team of Gail Simone and David Marquez is a match made in heaven and issue No. 2 will be even better. We’ll welcome back Jubilee while the mysterious four mutants (named the Outliers) meet the Wolverine, Rogue, and Gambit. Will this be a friendly meeting or involve claws and kinetic cards?
Space Ghost No. 5
- Writer: David Pepose
- Artist: Jonathan Lau
As Carlito Brigante said, “Here comes the pain!” It’s Space Ghost vs Zorak! This will be an intense battle as Space Ghost tries to save his newest teammates. But, how will Jan and Jace survive the Cult of Lokar?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles No. 2
- Writer: Jason Aaron
- Artist: Rafael Albuquerque
Michelangelo is a TV star in Tokoyo. If there’s anyone that would love this lifestyle it’s him. However, things aren’t the same without his brothers. He may have to reunite with them. Like Raphael in Jason Aaron’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles No. 1, ninjas come for him in his home.
DC vs Vampires: World War V No. 2
- Writers: Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss
- Artists: Tyler Boss and Otto Schmidt
Is Damian Wayne responsible for the attack on Barbara Gordon? Did Talia al Ghul go after Wonder Woman or is the Amazon vampire hunting her? Who’s the new Batman? We need answers to all of these questions. Hopefully, we’ll get answers in DC vs Vampires: World War V No. 2.
Vengeance Of The Moon Knight No. 9
- Writer: Jed MacKay
- Artist: Devmalya Pramanik
The description on ComiXology says, “CLASSIFIED!” but there are two things for certain. First, this is the last issue of this run of Vengeance of Moon Knight (Jed MacKay’s Moon Knight will continue). Second, Marc Spector will decide what kind of hero he wants to be. Does he kill the Shroud like Khonshu demands or continue his path of growth?
Transformers No. 12
- Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson
- Artist: Jorge Corona
It’s the end of this arc of Transformers. What’s next for the Autobots, Decepticons, and Earth? Will we see G.I. Joe or Cobra? We don’t know, but it’ll be revealed in Transformers No.12. You don’t want to miss this.
Fantastic Four No. 25
- Writer: Ryan North
- Artist: Carlos Gomez
In a longer-than-normal issue, The Fantastic Four journey to Latveria but are transported to an alien world instead. They probably want to confront Dr. Doom about his plans for the future (Blood Hunt No. 4). They’ll have to find resources on a planet hundreds of years behind theirs to return home.
Also, Johnny Storm has sex with an alien.
Paper Girls (older pick)
- Writer: Brian K Vaughan
- Artist: Cliff Chiang
Paper Girls on Amazon Prime being canceled was disappointing because it's one of the best comic books of this century. That’s high but appropriate praise, but true. Paper Girls is a beautiful look at friendship, loss, and finding yourself, and a good read whether you liked, hated, or didn’t watch the show.
