Dr. Doom and the other MVPs of Marvel Comics Blood Hunt
By Mark Lynch
Marvel Comics’ crossover Blood Hunt is over. The first vampire, Varnae, was killed by the combined force of Miles Morales and Brielle Brooks. As that’s happening, Dr. Doom uses a spell to bring the sun’s rays back to Earth. A feat that could only have been accomplished by Stephen Strange relinquishing the title of Sorcerer Supreme to him.
Now that the series is over, it’s time to look back at the MVPs of Blood Hunt. Who are the heroes that helped save the day and kept people alive? Let’s start with an unsung hero.
Sam Wilson
One of the first things Varnae’s Bloodcoven attempted was to capture and turn Sam Wilson into a vampire. With Captain America defeated and turned, Earth would lose hope. The Avengers decided to turn that plan against them.
Sam Wilson broadcasted to the world that the Avengers were still fighting. That was enough to put Varnae and his coven off their game. Without this speech, things would have gone differently.
The Midnight Mission
The Midnight Mission (Tigra, Soldier, 8-Ball, House of Shadows, Hunter's Moon, and Reese) carried Marc Spector’s goal of protecting the travelers of the night. With the skies blacked out, it was always night. That kept them busy without rest. Thankfully, they were more than up for the challenge.
Back in New York, Reese, 8-Ball, and Soldier protected their community and brought everyone they could back to the Midnight Mission (aka House of Shadows). Meanwhile, Tigra and Hunter's Moon went to Asgard to free Khonshu. The journey to Asgrard resurrected Marc Spector and helped even the odds with dozens of former Khonshu’s avatars fighting vampires.
Dracula
It must be weird seeing Dracula’s name on this list. You’d assume that he’d be happy with vampires ruling the world. However, he carved out a piece of Europe for himself and didn’t want someone ruining his creation (this happens in Jason Aaron's Avengers: War of the Vampires). That left him to help the heroes save the world.
The information of needing Brielle to kill Varnae (who they thought was Blade) was crucial to their victory. Despite Dr. Doom's spell (more on that later), it wouldn't have worked without Dracual assistance.
The X-Men
No matter the crossover, you can count on the X-Men to play a role. In this case, Wolverine (Logan and Laura), Magik, Psylocke, and Jubilee. Each of them had their adventures when they protected innocent people or stopped more vampires from rising.
Other heroes did this and connected their mini-series to Blood Hunt. The difference is the X-Men issues were the best. Each comic book highlighted the lengths the X-Men would go to save innocent people despite being hated and feared. I highly recommend checking them out.

Reed Richards and Alicia Masters
The Fantastic Four tie-in was more than a connection to the crossover. Writer Ryan North showed that Reed would rather die than let people get hurt. We’ve seen him do this for decades, but it seemed different. He didn’t have the other members of the Fantastic Four. He almost literally stretched himself too thin. Thankfully, he had Alicia Masters with him.
Alicia played a pivotal role in keeping people safe. Reed spent too much time focusing on vampires not being real instead of solving the problem. He needed Alicia's creativity to get him thinking outside of the box.
In the end, Reed still thinks vampires aren’t supernatural, but it doesn’t matter. They still protected people.
Brielle and Miles Morales
Dracula told Brielle that Varnae could only be killed by someone related to Blade. However, Blade was more than himself. He had Varnae controlling his body. This leads to Miles Morales helping Brielle deliver the final blow. Since Varnae birthed Miles’ vampirism (Blood Hunt No. 1), he was technically his father. After weakening Varnae with their attack, Dr. Doom delivered the killing stroke.
Doctor Doom and Stephen Strange
Even after everyone chipped in, this isn’t possible without the two strongest sorcerers in the world. Stephen Strange had to get over himself to admit Doctor Doom was right. He must give Doom the title of Sorcerer Supreme (Blood Hunt No. 4). For Doom, he already had everything he needed except the title. With it, he brought light back to the world.
Of course, he had to let everyone know he was the world’s savior. This was the first big step to One World Under Doom which conveniently took place after Marvel announced Robert Downey Jr. as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Dr. Doom. Is this connected? Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out.
