Agatha All Along is full of "really freakin' weird people", cast member says
Marvel Studios kicked off its Multiverse Saga with its first ever Disney Plus series, WandaVision. The critically-acclaimed show transformed Wanda Maximoff into the Scarlet Witch, setting the stage for her attempt to travel through the multiverse. Its importance as both an entity on its own and a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise was clear, and its success led to spinoff Agatha All Along.
This one is perhaps even more of a mystery. Kathryn Hahn's beloved witchy villain Agatha Harkness will get to unleash her power all over again in the upcoming Disney Plus show, but there is still so much unknown about it; both in terms of its own story and its purpose to the Multiverse Saga. But if the trailers are anything to go by, we're all in for one heck of a fun ride as it takes us on the journey of showcasing what it's all about.
With its premiere on the horizon, a new teaser has given us an insight into the show's storyline and some of the unique and unusual characters we'll meet on The Witches' Road.
Agatha All Along and its "delightful group" of witches
Marvel Studios has unveiled a new featurette for Agatha All Along, which previews the characters we're going to meet in the show. It also features interviews with a number of cast members as they give us a bit of insight into what to expect from some of them.
Kathryn Hahn of course dives into Agatha's history, reminding audiences that the witch lost her powers at the end of WandaVision after a showdown with the Scarlet Witch didn't go her way. However, the spinoff show will now highlight just how hated Agatha has always been, as she's going to need to rely on others - who, again, don't particularly like her - to help her reach the end of the Witches' Road and regain her powers.
Among those witches she will meet are Alice Wu-Gulliver, a protection witch who is "still getting in touch with her powers that's been lying dormant for a long time", according to star Ali Ahn. It looks like she manages to do that as the footage shows her potentially destroying a terrifying demon that the group encounters on the Witches' Road.
Another witch we meet in the featurette is Jennifer Kale, who is portrayed by Sasheer Zamata. The star reveals that her magic comes from "chemistry and alchemy". The character is also the most "sarcastic" of the bunch, and it sounds like she in particular will have a no-nonsense approach when it comes to dealing with Agatha and her schemes. Hahn goes as far as to describe the pair as having a "love-hate relationship".
The featurette also reveals how WandaVision's Mrs. Hart is brought back into the fold, implying that she is either a green witch or simply made to substitude as one, as Agatha tells her that they are hosting a party in order to get her to join. Actress Debra Jo Rupp reprises the role and she says that the group of witches that Agatha puts together are "just really freakin' weird people". And honestly, that sounds amazing.
Perhaps the weirdest of the bunch (and we mean that in the nicest of ways) is Lilia Calderau, played by none other than the incomparable Patti LuPone. Executive producer Jac Schaeffer describes the character as "batty all over the place" and LuPone reveals that she has "flashes of sights, of visions". The character specialises in "divination" and will surely be one of the show's most interesting additions. Again, Patti LuPone people!
The wild card in all of this might just be Rio Vidal. Portrayed by Aubrey Plaza, we first met the character in the first trailer for Agatha All Along, when she told Agatha to claw her way out of the Agnes personality that Wanda had left her trapped in. Here, she is seen literally rising from the grave as she claws her own way out of the ground, with Plaza telling viewers that the rest of the group think she's "some kind of badass".
Whatever kind of role Rio Vidal ends up playing going forward, it's clear that she will be one of the biggest presences on the show. Whether that's for the same purpose as Agatha remains to be seen, but since the two are seen squaring off against each other in the first trailer, it's likely that Rio could be an antagonistic force in the show.
And let's not forget about Joe Locke's mysterious character. Although he isn't featured much in this particular featurette, a recent teaser revealed that the character known as "Teen" can't actually reveal his real name to Agatha due to some kind of magic. So, no doubt that will come into play throughout the nine-episode run. And given the rumors about his true identity, we expect it to play a major role indeed.
It isn't long until Agatha All Along graces our screens and now that we know a little bit more about the characters we'll meet on the show, its premiere can't get here soon enough!
Agatha All Along will premiere on Disney Plus on Wednesday, September 18, with a double-episode premiere at 9:00 p.m. ET and 6:00 p.m. PT.
