Grading all of the cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine
By Mark Lynch
People assumed that 20th Century Fox performers would appear in Deadpool and Wolverine. If this is the end of that universe, they’d have to go out with a bang. As time passed, we started to see how true this was.
Performers like Tyler Mane (Sabretooth), Dafnee Keen (X-23), and Jennifer Garner (Elektra) were announced or added to the Deadpool and Wolverine IMDb. This meant other former Marvel movie characters would appear. This was confirmed during the movie.
Here are the characters and performer cameos that appeared during Deadpool and Wolverine. Characters like Deadpool’s family aren’t on this list. They’re part of the Deadpool franchise and aren't cameos. The same goes for Emma Corrin's Cassandra Nova (who gets an A+) and Matthew Macfadyen's Mr. Paradox (A) who played the antagonists.
It would be unfair to judge the next four performers and their characters. It was great to see them, but if you blinked, you may have missed them. Sure, you noticed they were there, but that’s about it. Instead of giving them a poor grade, let's go with an incomplete.
- Jason Flemyng as Azazel
- Billy Clements as the Russian
- Dania Ramirez as Callisto
- Kelly Hu as Lady Deathstrike
Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan
John Favreau was everything you’d want him to be as Happy Hogan. He was funny, professional, and compassionate. More than anything, his chemistry with Ryan Reynolds was perfect.
Grade: A
Dafne Keen as X-23
Dafne Keen’s X-23 reveal in the final trailer for Deadpool and Wolverine upset fans. They wished the surprise happened in the movie. Thankfully, it didn’t matter. Keen was better than she was in Logan. Something many people didn’t think was possible. This should lead to her being *the* Wolverine of the MCU.
Grade: A+ (because there's nothing higher than this)
Tyler Mane as Sabretooth
Mane’s appearance in X-Men left a lot to be desired and Deadpool and Wolverine was his chance to redeem himself. Despite being on screen for less than two minutes, he did that. He was as grizzly and angry as Sabretooth is in the comics.
Grade: B
Henry Cavill as Wolverine
Cavill was one of the actors fans wanted to play Wolverine. They may not get him in the MCU, but at least they’ll have this.
No one could have seen this coming. That makes the cameo one of the best. Cavill gets high marks for having the build, gruff voice, and looking good with the Wolverine hairdo. Sadly, this is the last time we’ll see him as Logan.
Cavill was one of the actors fans wanted to play Wolverine. They may not get him in the MCU, but at least they’ll have this.
Grade: A
Chris Evans as Human Torch
Chris Evans’ reveal as Johnny Storm created a roar of laughter in the theaters. The fake-out with the red, white, and blue wristband was smart, but most of the theater knew it wasn't Steve Rogers (except me).
Evans was given a chance to shine brighter than when he says, “Flame on.” He was as funny and sarcastic as both Fantastic Four movies. The only thing missing was the rest of his team.
Grade: A+
Jennifer Garner as Elektra
Admittedly, this writer isn’t a fan of Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios. However, Garner proved she wasn’t the problem in Daredevil or Elektra. All she needed was the right creative team and she could have been one of the best. Regrettably, it took nearly two decades to get it right.
Grade: A+
Wunmi Mosaku as B-15
Wunmi Mosaku proved she’ll always be great. Watching her be entertaining and stern with Deadpool was fantastic. What sticks out is her flirting with Peter. It was subtle and obvious and her appearance came at the right time.
Grade: A
Ray Park as Toad
Toad had good moments but had the same problem as his comic book counterpart. He’s still Toad. Ray Park was good, but he didn’t do much other than flip a switch with his tongue and get beat up.
Grade: C
Aaron Stanford as Pyro
You couldn’t have asked for a better performance out of Pyro. Aaron Stanford showed that his version was still evil and followed whoever had the best deal. Like X-Men: The Last Stand, it didn’t work out for him.
Grade: A+
Aaron W. Reed as Juggernaut
Juggernaut was cast to be the big guy being taken out by the much smaller hero. If Laura didn’t fight him, his character would be forgettable. That said, a standing ovation to Aaron W. Reed. He understood his role and didn't overdo it.
Grade: C
Channing Tatum as Gambit
Channing Tatum as Gambit had one of the biggest laughs of the movie. He was supposed to play Gambit for years and it never happened. Instead of being bitter, Tatum was a class act. He was in on the joke and used an overly heavy Cajun accent to prove it. However, when it was time to fight, he reminded the world why he was one of the best action stars.
Grade: A+
Wesley Snipes as Blade
Wesley Snipes made up for his poorly reviewed role in Blade Trinity. He gave fans all of his classic lines and was just as snarky and skilled as you remember him being. The best part may have been him saying there’d never be another Blade. Hopefully, he’s wrong, but it isn’t looking good.
Grade: A+
Blake Lively as Lady Deadpool
Seeing Blake Lively without the mask would have been nice, but this adds to Lady Deadpool’s mystique. Her walk out of the void exuded the confidence you’d want from the leader of the Deadpool Corp. But, does anyone remember her fighting? Probably not. Thankfully, she delivered her lines flawlessly, but no one expected anything less.
Grade: C
Matthew McConaughey as Cowboy Deadpool and Nathan Fillion as Headpool
A debate can be made that they should’ve been on the incomplete list, but their characters were memorable. Especially Headpool. You have to love that Nathan Fillion will play every comic book character he can. Just wait until we see him as Guy Gardner.
