Hugh Jackman made grown men cry on the set of Deadpool and Wolverine

Hugh Jackman is a larger-than-life star in his own right, but when he donned the iconic Wolverine suit for Deadpool and Wolverine, he moved grown men to tears.

Deadpool and Wolverine is one of this year's most anticipated movies. Scratch that - it's this year's most anticipated movie, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks set to return to the big screen with a vengeance. That's just one of the reasons why audiences are ready to see this movie, but the MCU phenomenon feels just a little bit more phenomenal in this particular movie as it is shaping up to be the centerpiece of the franchise's Multiverse Saga.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman star in the film, bringing back Deadpool and Wolverine for an adventure that will introduce both characters into the MCU. It's also a big deal for Jackman, who returns to the role of Wolverine for the first time since 2017's Logan - the movie in which he planned on retiring his portrayal of the character. The big difference this time, however, is that he's wearing the character's signature X-Men uniform for the first time ever; something that has the fans so ready to see the movie.

It sounds like the audience aren't the only ones excited as Jackman's wearing of the suit made some members of the production team feel a certain kind of way (emotional, they felt emotional).

Hugh Jackman in the Wolverine suit had grown men "sobbing"

It turns out that the sight of Hugh Jackman in a comic-accurate Wolverine suit is a big deal for everybody (and so it should be), as it moved adult men working on Deadpool and Wolverine to tears. The movie's executive producer recently spoke to HeyUGuys about the camera test and how the mere sight of Jackman in the Wolverine suit made people emotional She said:

"It was one of the craziest things. It was the camera test. It was before we started shooting. To see both of those guys, first of all, in costume together was just mind-blowing, but Hugh walking out in the yellow and blue, I mean, there were grown men, like, sobbing on set. So we knew it was a special, very special thing."

Needless to say it's understandable how those men felt, because once it was confirmed that Jackman would reprise his role as Wolverine in the MCU and that he would be wearing his comic-accurate suit, the fans went into meltdown.

The star's performance in Fox's X-Men franchise has gone down in history as one of the best performances in comic book movie history. Jackman did it all as Logan, capturing the essence of the character, looking every bit as formidable as him on the silver screen, and making a whole generation of X-Men fans fall in love with Wolverine. And yet, it never felt right that such a comic-accurate performance was never allowed to don the legendary yellow and blue spandex.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently revealed that the X-Men movies shied away from the comic-accurate suits as a number of studio execs at the time saw how successful The Matrix was with black leather and decided that the X-Men should have similar attire. It's very much an example of "it seemed like a good idea at the time" because, while those movies have mostly aged very well, the questionable costume choices have not. To be fair that's largely because we're living in an era that embraces comic-accuracy now, while the X-Men movies were made for one that didn't.

Even so, the emotional response to Jackman in the classic yellow and blue suit (both from those on set to the audience that went wild after watching the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer) showcases the desire to see something so beautifully comic-accurate after all this time.

You can see the suit too (and likely get emotional about it as well) when Deadpool and Wolverine arrives in movie theaters on July 25, 2024.
