Marvel Comics teases Wolverine and X-Factor comic books
By Mark Lynch
The X-Men event Fall of X is almost over. After the mutants defeat Orchis and Nimron, Rise from the Ashes will begin. So far, there isn’t much known about what's next other than mutants being hated and feared (again) and on the run. However, there was an announcement of future Marvel Comics X-titles.
Exceptional X-Men (writer Eve Ewing and artist Carmen Carnero), X-Men (Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman), and Uncanny X-Men (Gail Simone and David Marquez) seem to be Marvel’s premiere X-titles. Joining them are Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing’s NYX, Stephanie Phillips Phoenix, and Geoffrey Thorne’s X-Force. These are the only titles where the creative teams were announced, but there's still more to come. Among them are two I'm looking forward to, X-Factor and Wolverine.
Wolverine
Marvel’s announcement for Wolverine came with the tag, “He’d kill for some time alone, but the fight always finds him.” This could mean everything that happened during X-Men: Fall of X took a toll on him. He could want some peace. If you’re a fan of Logan, you know that’ll never happen.
Who will be Logan’s next big villain? It’s too soon to use Victor Creed after Wolverine: Sabretooth War. However, there could be Sabretooth variants that survived and looking to make Logan’s life miserable.
Also coming out of that series is Graydon Creed. As this is being written, we don’t know Graydon's status. Logan may have prevented him from killing his son. This would lead to Wolverine being his next target.
This writer hopes that Logan fights someone new. Marvel seems to be creating original villains for heroes to fight (for example, Raneem Rashad in Miles Morales: Spider-Man). Maybe it’s time to give Logan someone new to battle.
X-Factor
X-Factor has gone through a lot of different teams and agendas. The newest could be a propaganda tool. The tag says, “Officially sanctioned to protect a world that hates and fears (hates and fear was crossed out) loves and adores them." Does this mean X-Factor is returning to their government days? It certainly does.
"Formed by the government in response to a post-Krakoa outbreak of mutant paramilitary, ops squads, and mercenary teams, X-FACTOR will be co-led by Angel and Havok and include recruits like Pyro, Frenzy, Feral, and more. Part special agents for missions that require an arsenal of superpowers and part celebrity propaganda machine, X-FACTOR will wage war against emerging factions like the Mutant Underground and X-Term." -Marvel
Marvel.com reports that writer Mark Russell (Fantastic Four: Life Story) and artist Bob Quinn (Knights of X) are the creative team behind X-Factor. The team will be co-led by Angel and Havok (there’s no way they play nice together) and joined by Frenzy, Feral, Pyro, and more. The “and more” means additional mutants will be added to the team. Don’t be shocked when Multiple Man and Strong Guy are recruited. They’re staples on X-Factor and both add comedy to the squad.
"The thing I've always loved about the X-Men is that they're characters first, Super Heroes second. So being able to write characters like Havok and Angel and Frenzy in a post-Krakoa reality is an opportunity to write about what I really care about, which is how do we help each other survive the apathy of the world we live in?” -Mark Russell
Frenzy being on this team is a great sign. She was an underrated part of the Krakoan era and deserves more appearances. Putting her in this situation will allow more of her depth to be shown.
After finding a home with Krakoa, being controlled by the government will feel like Hell to Frenzy. She will likely rebel against the government every chance she gets. However, the consequences will be dire. Don’t be shocked when this experience leads her back down a path of villainy. However, this writer hopes she remains a hero. It's a better look on her.
