Veteran Avenger to have major role in the MCU's Mutants Era

One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most popular characters could be heavily involved in the franchise's X-Men era.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is primarily focused on the Multiverse Saga right now; and for good reason. It's brought the franchise some of its biggest wins, expanded its horizons beyond the silver screen (with the addition of multiple Disney Plus series), and is gearing up for its long-awaited Multiversal War, with the returning staple Avengers movies. And with that will come Robert Downey Jr.'s returning to the franchise, as he plays new villain Doctor Doom.

But looking ahead, once that storyline wraps up, it's looking like it will be time for the Mutants to get the spotlight. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that The Mutants Era is in its beginning stages, with the arrival of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in Deadpool and Wolverine officially kicking that era off.

Whether that means we will have seen the last of The Avengers at that point is unclear, but there are reports that some of the veteran heroes will be involved. In fact, there is one that will reportedly be closely tied to the mutants.

Scarlet Witch will reportedly be a big part of the Mutants Saga

According to Marvel scooper account Film News, Wanda Maximoff will have "a big role" in the MCU's Mutants Saga. The Scarlet Witch was seen most recently in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when it was suggested that she had died, but fans are convinced that the character will return in the very near-future, and that sounds possible as the scooper also adds that they heard Elizabeth Olsen will be getting a new contract with Marvel Studios for more appearances in the franchise.

If you're familiar with the Marvel Comics, it probably isn't too surprising to you that Wanda may have an extended role in the Mutants Era (you know, other than the whole Scarlet Witch apparently being dead thing). The character is one of the most regular additions to the X-Men comics, with Magneto even being revealed as the father of both her and her twin brother Pietro Maximoff, a.k.a. Quicksilver.

That's one of the reasons that Quicksilver was featured in the Fox X-Men movies, as he is both an Avenger and an X-Man. And given that the Multiverse Saga brought the actor behind the X-Men's Quicksilver, Evan Peters, into the MCU in a Scarlet Witch-led project (WandaVision), it is quite possible that the studio has been laying these breadcrumbs for quite some time now. After all, Marvel doesn't do anything without a reason, so - much like how the Mutants Era was foreshadowed by cameos from Patrick Stewart's Professor X and the X-Men theme in Ms. Marvel - this could have been the beginning of the franchise acknowledging Wanda's connection to the mutants.

Wanda was one of the MCU's most underrated characters in her earlier years, often playing supporting and guest roles in Avengers or Captain America movies. However, WandaVision officially saw her evolve into the Scarlet Witch, presenting her with that spotlight that fans had been longing for her to have. She then co-headlined Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when she became its unexpected villain as the Darkhold had corrupted her.

The movie implied that we had seen the last of the character, but the rumors of her return have persisted. Audiences are expecting a comeback at some point, with rumors suggesting it could be in WandaVision spinoffs Agatha All Along and/or Vision Quest, and other reports claiming it could be in a Young Avengers project, or even one of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Scarlet Witch having a role to play in the Mutants Saga seems likely at this point, but even on the off chance that it doesn't happen, all of these reports do have one thing in common: We haven't seen the last of Wanda Maximoff in the MCU.
