Star Wars series not cancelled after all; another season being "explored"

It sounds like one Star Wars veteran may be about to return to screens for another adventure in that galaxy so far, far away.

That galaxy so far, far away has expanded its horizons in the past half-decade. The Star Wars franchise celebrated the launch of the Disney Plus streaming service by telling stories through it, as a number of shows were produced for the streamer. In fact, one of them helped herald in the Disney Plus era as The Mandalorian launched with the platform in 2019.

Since then, the Star Wars universe has added more and more shows to its catalog, with some being direct spinoffs of The Mandalorian and others giving the spotlight to some of the franchise's most legendary characters. Some even launched new stories set within the vast world of the franchise, beyond just adding to the Skywalker Saga.

It's been an unusual few months for fans of the Star Wars TV series, as a number of them have reportedly been cancelled (albeit for different reasons). It turns out, however, that one which ended two years ago might make a triumphant return.

Ewan McGregor reveals Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 is still possible

Ewan McGregor recently appeared at LA Comic-Con and suggested that a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi could be on the cards in the future. The actor, who portrays the titular character in the Star Wars franchise returned to the role in the 2022 Disney Plus series but it seemed as if the series was set to be a one-and-done project. But that might not be the case after all.

As reported by Deadline, McGregor revealed that Lucasfilm and Disney are "exploring" potential ideas for a second season of the show, adding:

"Obviously, between the end of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and when Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi, there’s got to be another few stories in there."

The legendary actor made his Star Wars debut in 2001's Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, before going on to reprise it in sequels Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Even though the prequel trilogy wasn't universally adored, McGregor's performance was beloved by fans, with many regarding him as one of the most recognizable faces in the Star Wars franchise.

That's why it was all the more game-changing when it was revealed that the character would return in a Disney Plus series, as it was both a beautiful use of the new streaming platform and a great way of delving into uncharted territory with one of Star Wars' greatest characters. And it paid off, too, as Obi-Wan Kenobi went on to become one of Disney Plus' most popular original shows.

Many have been calling for a second season of it ever since, but it was widely accepted that the show would be a miniseries, wrapping up its story after the first season. And yet, the hope of more installments persisted, with audiences hoping that they might one day see McGregor return to the role.

McGregor himself is hopeful that more adventures await him in that galaxy so far, far away, telling LADBible earlier this year that he hopes they get "a chance to do another one" and that "I'm sure we will". That's a promising sign in and of itself.

In this era, where it seems like Star Wars' new and exciting future on the small screen has suddenly become non-existent, it would be pretty epic if one of the franchise's most successful series made a comeback to hold the line. And honestly, you'd be hard-pressed to find any Star Wars fan who wouldn't be happy to see Ewan McGregor back as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Needless to say, finding a way to bring him back would be a wise choice.
