Marvel revolutionized the post-credits scene

Post-credits scenes pre-date the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe; however, there is no doubt that Marvel Studios revolutionized the post-credits scene.

From the early days of the MCU, Marvel Studios strategically used post-credits scenes as part of their world-building process, with these scenes helping further the narrative. Often, these post-credits scenes were used to tease the introduction of new characters or storylines that would play a role in an upcoming Marvel release.

It all began with the first Marvel Studios release. At the end of Iron Man, Marvel Studios used the film’s post-credits scene to introduce Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. In the scene, Fury emerged from the shadows to introduce the Avengers Initiative and officially recruit Tony Stark to the project. This moment paved the way for the Avengers to assemble years later in The Avengers, and that scene was just the beginning.

Over the years, Marvel used its post-credits scenes to bridge the gap between projects and build anticipation for what was next to come in the MCU. It also began sprinkling in additional post-credits scenes for humor, giving fans fun sequences that would become just as iconic, such as the Captain America PSA video or Stan Lee’s cameo with the Watchers.

As the years have gone by, Marvel Studios has continued to leverage the post-credits scene in nearly all of its works. The problem is that since Avengers: Endgame, the post-credits scenes haven’t had quite the impact in the MCU that they once did. Instead, many of the post-Endgame post-credits scenes have not had a payoff and have introduced characters and plot lines that have gone nowhere.

Both Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps featured post-credits scenes that helped build towards Avengers: Doomsday. This is a major step to Marvel making its post-credits scenes feel impactful again, something that has been lacking in recent years – a sign that has given Marvel fans hope is that things are changing for the better.
