Even before Spider-Man: Brand New Day was released, fans knew the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film would feature a divisive post-credits scene. When early reactions made their way online, some reviewers called it one of the most "pointless" sequences in the franchise as a whole. Not too long after, the scene leaked, and fans deemed it a very exciting tease of what's coming next. Needless to say, there are very mixed reactions, and it may all stem from the fact that the sequence is... really confusing.
For the most part, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a street-level movie that isn't trying to set up multiple sequels or the next chapter in the MCU. But out of the blue, the end-credits footage breaks this rule and introduces us to a big mystery that isn't likely to be solved until the release of Avengers: Doomsday, at the earliest. But who wants to wait that long? Instead, let's go over what was shown and try to decipher what happened to Spider-Man.
But before we begin, be warned: There will be minor spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day ahead. If you don't want any surprises ruined, it's best to turn back now.
Loki could be to blame for the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Spider-Man: Brand New Day presented us with a simple yet intriguing scenario. For some reason, Spider-Man left Earth after the events of the film and suddenly finds himself in space. Nobody knows why this happened, or who is responsible for the hero's disappearance. Theories suggest the symbiote could somehow be to blame... but there could be another, more likely scenario: What if Loki took Spidey far away from all the madness that's about to ensue?
The last time audiences saw the God of Mischief, he was single-handedly holding all of the branched MCU timelines together. As such, it isn't far-fetched to assume that he's instrumental to the culmination of the Multiverse Saga.
So far, most Marvel heroes are oblivious to the fact that Doom is coming or what the villain plans to do. However, Loki could be the only one to learn about the upcoming threat, not only due to the information gathered by the TVA on alternate universes, but also because he would physically see if someone were to try to merge the MCU into Battleworld.
Avengers: Infinity War taught us that sometimes the only way to defeat a powerful villain is to let them win and lower their guard before striking again, so what if a similar scenario were to happen all over again? Multiple reports indicate that heroes like Tom Holland's Spider-Man and Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch won't be in Avengers: Doomsday, but will act as the protagonists of Avengers: Secret Wars. But where will they be in the meantime? Well, in the TVA (2024) No. 4 comic book, Wanda Maximoff was taken from her reality by the TVA, so a similar scenario could happen on the big screen.
Another key detail to take into consideration is the report that reveals Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine will also be key players in Avengers: Secret Wars. But why is this important? Well, because multiple rumors indicate that the two iconic Marvel heroes will fight each other in Tobey's universe during the opening sequence of Avengers: Doomsday, moments before the world is destroyed with them in it. So how is it possible they survived an apocalyptic event, unless someone like Loki suddenly took them out of their timeline?
The God of Mischief could be picking multiple heroes from across the multiverse and taking them away from their respective worlds and into space, to the place outside of time from which he keeps the MCU together. Another piece of "evidence" that supports this theory is the report claiming most Marvel heroes will be brainwashed by Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars, with the exception of a lucky few.
Well, this very same handful of heroes who will retain their free will could be the group of characters recruited by Loki and hidden outside of time. That would explain why Tom Holland's Spidey suddenly vanished from Earth.
Of course, the symbiote could still be responsible for Spidey's disappearance, or the MCU could surprise audiences with the introduction of the Beyonder and explain that this cosmic entity was the one who took Spidey into space. Hopefully, it won't be long before we get some much-needed answers.
