After a five-year wait, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally here, and it has been the talk of the town for many reasons. Audiences worldwide are still discussing the introduction of major Marvel Cinematic Universe characters and where we may see them next, along with what could be in store for anti-heroes like Hulk and the Punisher after the wall-crawler's latest adventure. But perhaps one of the main points of discussion is: what truly happened in the post-credits scene?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton stated that he purposefully landed on an "ambiguous" post-credits scene after toying with other ideas. While Cretton promised that audiences "will find out" what this sequence is setting up, an answer isn't likely to come anytime soon. So, it's time to break down three possible options for why Spidey suddenly disappeared from New York and was sighted in space.
Spider-Man could've been taken to the End of Time by Loki
Tom Hiddleston once stated that Tom Holland is his favorite Spider-Man of all time for reasons he "cannot disclose." At the time, many believed this statement implied Loki would get to fight against the likes of Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield's versions of Peter Parker, which is why Tom was his favorite. But what if it is the opposite way around, and Tom is his favorite Spider-Man because the two will need to team up to save the multiverse?
During the events of Loki season 2, we saw the God of Mischief involuntarily develop (and eventually control) an ability called "time-slipping," which allows him to jump between two points in time and space. With this in mind, Loki could easily appear in New York, grab Peter, and instantly take him to the End of Time. Furthermore, this would explain the strange "blip" or glitch audiences saw in the Spidey tracker in the post-credits scene of Brand New Day. If Peter were to disappear from time and space altogether, the blip could represent that he entered a completely separate area away from the regular Marvel universe.
Maybe Loki knows that Doom is coming and that the Ruler of Latveria plans to unite multiple different universes into one and create Battleworld. As such, the God of Mischief could look to recruit a team of heroes who could stand against the new big bad of the MCU. Maybe audiences will find out this is exactly where Wanda Maximoff has been hiding all along. Then again, this isn't the only option for where Peter really is.
Battleworld is the more likely answer
While Marvel hasn't officially confirmed that we'll see the formation of Battleworld either in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, we all know this storyline is bound to happen (just as it happened in Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars comic-book series). Battleworld is an amalgamation of different universes in which Doom reigns supreme. When it comes to the MCU, it could be the only way to prevent many Earths from colliding with each other.
We know incursions are apocalyptic-level events in which two or more different universes clash, and one or more of them are destroyed in the process. It has been heavily reported that one of the main objectives of Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom at the end of the Multiverse Saga will be to stop more incursions from happening, so what better solution than to combine every single Earth in existence into one, removing the concept of a "multiverse" along the way?
If this were to happen, then people who live in the MCU would suddenly be transported to this new planet, which will house beings from other universes as well. With that in mind, it is likely that the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Brand New Day was meant to signal that Peter was suddenly transported from Earth to Battleworld by Doctor Doom himself.
It remains to be seen exactly how the Ruler of Latveria will develop these God-like powers, but we know he will have a coven of witches by his side. Furthermore, Agatha All Along revealed that witches are able to steal each other's powers, so if his coven were to get hold of Wanda Maximoff's magic... well, anything could be possible.
Could Peter be in the Quantum Realm?
This is the "Reed Richards" theory of the article, because it is a bit of a stretch. But bear with me for a moment. It has been reported that Ant-Man will die in Avengers: Doomsday after leading Cassie Lang and the rest of the Young Avengers into the Quantum Realm. However, this raises the question: why would he sacrifice himself to take them to such a place in the first place? Well, a different rumor indicates that most Marvel heroes will be mind-controlled by Doctor Doom, and only the Young Avengers (and a handful of other iconic characters) will be free from the spell.
Maybe Scott will realize the fight against Doom is lost and the only chance at saving the day is to use his last moments to lead the Young Avengers to a place where the all-powerful villain won't be able to find them. A key thing to take into consideration is that Tom Holland's Spider-Man is one of the few heroes reported to still have free will by the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. So maybe there's a chance that the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is purposefully trying to misguide audiences, making them believe that Peter Parker is in space when, in reality, he's in the Quantum Realm.
The Quantum Realm is a universe that sits outside the usual conventions of space and time, explaining why the Spidey tracker could've "glitched" when locating Spider-Man there. Furthermore, it would also explain why it appears Peter is suddenly at a random point in space. Granted, this is the least likely theory out of the three, but it's a possibility worth exploring nonetheless.
