Spider-Man: Brand New Day gets the trailer update we've been waiting for

Fans have been worried that Marvel may have forgotten about Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has offered up an update to ease those concerns.

There has been such a push from Marvel Studios for the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday in December that you might be forgiven for forgetting that there is actually another Marvel Cinematic Universe movie coming out first. Spider-Man: Brand New, which marks the fourth collaboration between Sony and Marvel, will release this summer and fans have been longing for some kind of update on it.

While it's not unusual for a movie with a July release date to avoid a debut trailer five months out from its theatrical debut, the Avengers: Doomsday focus and the lack of a trailer debut at the Super Bowl has left fans feeling a little upset and even concerned for the upcoming Spidey film. Thankfully, they needn't be worried any longer.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day director addresses trailer delay with a positive response

It sounds like we won't have much longer to wait for the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer. Director Destin Daniel Cretton recently spoke to Big Gold Belt and discussed the heavily-anticipated movie, teasing the arrival of the long-awaited trailer. He found the humor in the high-demand for the trailer, particularly given that the film is still five months away, but he knows the excitement level is high, saying:

"I think it’s so funny how people really want a trailer... I mean, of course it’s gonna come … it’s gonna be really good when it comes. It’s coming. It’s coming."

Although he didn't offer up an exact release date, it's clear that it won't be too far away. We are coming up on the typical timeframe for some kind of teaser for a summer movie, so that will probably be imminent. After all, Brand New Day has the potential to make $1 billion based on the performances of the previous Spider-Man movies, so you can rest assured that Sony and Marvel will want to get word-of-mouth out to general audiences as soon as possible. And the initial buzz from the four Avengers: Doomsday trailers has leveled-off just enough to allow Spidey to have the spotlight.

Again, this is actually a pretty standard practice when it comes to the timing for summer movie trailers. It's just that the focus on Avengers: Doomsday has drawn the spotlight to the fact that Marvel is heavily promoting a movie that isn't out until December while seemingly ignoring its big summer release. But there is a method to this madness.

While Avengers movies have performed extremely well at the box office, the franchise's Multiverse Saga has struggled to match the heights of the Infinity Saga, so there is a concern that Doomsday and its sequel Secret Wars might struggle. The early promo, focused specifically on major Avengers stars like Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, as well as the return of the X-Men, should be enough to show MCU fans that this is worth seeing in theaters come Christmastime. Spider-Man, on the other hand, has its own in-built fanbase that still remembers the critically-acclaimed Spider-Man: No Way Home from 2021. So, regardless of how the MCU's overall standing is, a Spider-Man movie will likely do well because, well, he's Spider-Man!

This all comes after the first trailer for the movie leaked online just a few months back, ironically at the same time that the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser surfaced. Sony very quickly pulled all trace of it from the internet although it had been consumed by millions of people at that point. While no long-term damage had been done, it did galvanize the fandom to vocalise their support for the film and fight for an official trailer to be released.

The real surprise came when it was revealed that both Marvel and Sony were skipping the Super Bowl this year, marking a 16-year first for the former. That meant no Spider-Man trailer at a time when it could have benefitted from the boost. While MCU fans are ready for Brand New Day, an early promo of Tom Holland's return as the webslinger could have really caught the attention of mainstream audiences unfamiliar with the fact that a new film is coming out this summer.

Cretton's comments make clear that a trailer is on the way, so it's only a matter of time until the promo train begins for what is undoubtedly going to be one of this summer's biggest releases. Yes, there were opportunities to start it earlier but at least now we know that Spider-Man will be swinging his way onto our streaming devices in the first Brand New Day trailer in the not-too-distant future.
