Where The Mandalorian and Grogu takes place on the Star Wars timeline

The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first theatrical Star Wars event in seven years. Where does it fit within the franchise's chronology?

The Mandalorian laid the groundwork for a new era of Star Wars, while simultaneously and triumphantly launching the Disney Plus streaming service in the Fall of 2019. The show was so lucrative that six more live-action Star Wars series were greenlit in the years to follow. The Mandalorian is the only one to release three seasons of action-packed adventures.

The Mandalorian’s rookie year explored a previously vacant time period for Star Wars television and film content. It took place a few years after the Empire’s downfall in Return of the Jedi. The episodic series effectively told its own unconnected tale centered around Din Djarin and Grogu (although audiences didn’t know the little green guy’s name at that time). The sophomore effort picked up after the first season and would recruit familiar faces – the most shocking of which was Boba Fett. But it was Ahsoka’s centerpiece chapter that made the biggest splash.

The former earned the first spin-off show, called The Book of Boba Fett. That trails The Mandalorian Season 2 and even features Din Djarin and Grogu, bringing the pair back together after the astonishing climax that led Luke Skywalker to temporarily adopt the young force-wielder. Ahsoka had more of a cameo role in The Book of Boba Fett.

Then, The Mandalorian Season 3 completes the bounty hunter’s conflict with Moff Gideon. The series concludes with Din Djarin deciding to work with the New Republic. Ashoka’s titular series is situated around the same time period, taking her to the far corners of the galaxy. The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the duo’s journey. Without further evidence it is safe to position the new movie after Ahsoka’s first season.

Even if Din Djarin and Grogu are presented to viewers in an almost entirely post-Return of the Jedi world (some flashbacks from the series take us back to the Imperial days), the most significant supporting characters in the film were known from a prior Star Wars era. It was toward the end of The Mandalorian Season 3 that Carson Teva met with former “rebel” Zeb. That re-introduction into the franchise was his live-action debut. The strong purple Lasat was a core crewmember on the Star Wars Rebels animated show and is now a reliable New Republic pilot.

Rotta the Hutt was just a baby when he was at the center of the plot in The Clone Wars animated movie that kicked off a successful seven season run. There are some poignant parallels between that chronicle and The Mandalorian and Grogu as Ziro the Hutt worked with the Separatists to kidnap Rotta in the past and, in the film, the Hutt Twins conspire against their nephew. In the former, Anakin and Ahsoka rescued Rotta and here Din Djarin and Grogu are the ones helping Jabba the Hutt’s son.

The Hutt Twins originally took over Jabba’s territory on Tatooine and were apart of The Book of Boba Fett narrative. They made a deal with Boba Fett to avoid conflict and left for the planet Nal Hutta. This is where a bulk of The Mandalorian and Grogu’s story plays out.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is the 12th cinematic Star Wars release in the franchise’s nearly 50-year history. It is the only movie to fall chronologically between the original Star Wars trilogy and the sequel trilogy. The other two standalone Star Wars stories (Rogue One and Solo) both take place between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy, on the timeline.

Another Star Wars movie, Starfighter, is scheduled to come out next year. That will also reside outside of the Skywalker saga and is expected to be the first Star Wars plot to transpire after the events of the sequel trilogy. Fans will have to wait until 2027 to see how that narrative will unfold.
