The Boys season 6 isn't happening (but there's a twist)

The Boys officially comes to an end with its season 5 finale, ruling out the possibility of a sixth season. Thankfully, it's not the end for this franchise.

Depending on when you read this, the season 5 finale of Prime Video’s The Boys may have concluded. That means some of your favorite characters are either dead or mourning the people they lost. Or, if Homelander or the Deep are counted among the fallen, viewers are probably dancing on their graves. Nevertheless, season 5 episode 8 of The Boys is the finale.

That's series finale; as in the last episode of the series ever. The adaptation of Garth Ennis' gritty comic book series is officially over, so if you're hoping to see it return for season 6, you will unfortunately be disappointed. The ride with The Seven and The Boys is officially over.

Why The Boys season 6 isn't happening

Eric Kripke always had a plan for The Boys and that involved wrapping it up when the time felt right. The showrunner told The Hollywood Reporter, “From the very beginning, I wanted to wrap it out around season five.” He also added, “The show is a serialized story that is about Butcher and Homelander slowly crashing into each other, and the show doesn’t work without either of those.” And this is very true - with the show centred on two larger-than-life forces, it has to reach a boiling point at some point. As Kripke points out: “So, you just can’t keep that going on forever, you have to let them smash into each other.”

Knowing all of that, it makes sense the series would end with its fifth season. If you’re a fan of TV, you may have noticed that shows have been keeping things simple with fewer episodes and seasons. A good example of this is Netflix’s Stranger Things, which also concluded after five seasons. There are a multitude of reasons for the shorter seasons in this streaming TV era. From shorter attention spans to the high production costs, television as a format is no longer 10 seasons of 22 episodes. And honestly, some stories are better served with 50 or fewer episodes. Regardless of the reason, it’s doubtful that this trend will stop.

Plus, when it comes to The Boys, this isn’t the end of the Vought Cinematic Universe.

There are two spinoffs of The Boys in development

Even though The Boys season 5 marks the end of the Prime Video series, the franchise itself is far from over, for there are multiple spinoffs in the works - with each one designed to expand the world beyond the original series.

One of the spin-offs already announced is Vought Rising, starring Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy) and Aya Cash (Clara Vought/Liberty, and later Stormfront). Also appearing on the show are Bombsight (played by Mason Dye) and Torpedo (Will Hochman). Solider Boy was a fan-favorite character on the original series, so to see his story expanded in the franchise's next installment is obviously a very exciting aspect of the spinoff - especially as it will allow the VCU to explore uncharted territory.

The Boys prequel series is expected to spotlight Soldier Boy and Clara Vought (known to some as Stormfront) on a murder mystery during the early days of Vought. Also, since this will likely start before the former became a corrupted version of Captain America, and when Clara was a more out-and-proud Nazi.

Vought Rising is currently scheduled to be released in 2027. Although a premiere date has not yet been set, the spinoff just wrapped production in March of this year, so it's currently on track for a 2027 release; it's just going to require some time to add in the extensive special effects requred for a show of this nature.

As a fan of original spinoff Gen V, it was disappointing that the show was canceled. Not only were the cast phenomenal, but the writing was too. It felt like the perfect show to highlight how this generation of teenagers would act with superhuman abilities. There were also a lot of life lessons about acceptance because of the differences. Sadly, the show came to an end when many thought it was better than The Boys in many ways.

It may be naive, but I’m hopeful that we haven’t seen the last of Jaz Sinclair (Marie Moreau), Lizzie Broadway (Emma Meyer), and London Thor and Derek Luh (who both play Jordan Li). Maybe Gen V was canceled to make way for something bigger and better. But, for now, this is the end of the road for them.

The other spin-off coming is The Boys: Mexico. As of writing, there are only a couple of things to note. First, it will be produced by Gael García Bernal (who you may know as Jack Russell in the Marvel Disney Plus Special Presentation Werewolf by Night) and Andor's Diego Luna - with both actors considering roles in the series, too. It's also being written by Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. And, according to reports, it will be a Spanish-speaking program.

As of now, the show's premise, release date, and when it takes place in The Boys timeline remain a mystery. When more is revealed, Bam Smack Pow will report it.
