The wall-crawler has finally returned to the big screen after a five-year hiatus, and he has been met with open arms. Spider-Man: Brand New Day was not only released to an incredible critical response (with fans unanimously agreeing it is one of the character's best movies), but it also made box-office history along the way.
The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film surpassed Avengers: Doomsday's domestic opening and nearly reached the $1 billion mark during its first three days in theaters. Needless to say, the whole world wants to see more of the friendly neighborhood hero, and the best part is that he's here to stay.
After the credits roll on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, audiences are treated to a message that reveals "Spider-Man will be back." Unfortunately, it is unclear when or where Tom Holland's Peter Parker will show up next. After all, the iconic actor wasn't part of the initial Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal, and it is still too early to tell who is officially joining Avengers: Secret Wars. But regardless of when Tom swings back onto the big screen, we may already know what the future holds for his character.
Tom Holland confirms we'll see the symbiote again, but that it will be challenging to adapt the black suit on the big screen
It's been a while since we've seen Spider-Man bond with the symbiote on the big screen. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 brought this iconic storyline to life, although to very mixed results. Since then, fans have been asking Marvel to go back to the drawing board and adapt this arc once again, and such a day may come sooner than originally expected.
In a video published by Cinépolis MX, Holland was asked whether Peter would get to bond with the symbiote in Brand New Day, to which the actor answered:
"I can't answer that question. But one day, I'm sure we'll get to see the symbiote."
As we now know, the symbiote wasn't integral to the plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, even if the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home set the parasitic alien up for bigger things to come. But while the symbiote is just waiting for the ideal moment to strike, it will be challenging to bring it to life. During the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Tom revealed that he wants Spidey's Black Suit to look as alive as it did in Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man 2, but it would be challenging to do so without VFX:
"If we ever got to do a black suit in Spider-Man, I don't know how we would tackle that challenge, because they did it so well in the [Marvel's Spider-Man 2] game, and I don't know how you make a suit that is similar to the one in the game without having a CG component."
Interestingly, Horowitz also asked Tom about the possibility of Peter bonding with the symbiote during Avengers: Secret Wars, to which the British actor replied that he has "no idea" what the multiversal crossover is about. Despite that, the final chapter in the MCU's multiverse saga would be a very fitting place to introduce a new live-action iteration of the Black Suit.
The first time the wall-crawler ever came across the symbiote in the comic book world was during the original Secret Wars series, published in 1984. Furthermore, insider James Mack revealed that the MCU's adaptation of this storyline will feature a sequence in which Tom Holland's Peter Parker is mind-controlled and wears the Black Suit. Furthermore, he will get to fight his multiversal counterparts, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, according to the same source.
Different reports have also claimed that Venom will be one of the recurring villains in Tom Holland's Spider-Man's newest trilogy, which started with Brand New Day. But perhaps the biggest clue that the Lethal Protector will be back on the big screen comes courtesy of actor Michael Mando, who portrayed Scorpion in the latest MCU project. Mando has teased that his character will eventually bond with the symbiote, just as happened in the source material.
All signs indicate Marvel has big plans for the symbiote (and Venom) in the future, and such a storyline could begin as soon as next year with the release of Avengers: Secret Wars. Besides, since Spider-Man: Brand New Day revealed that Peter will go to space, it would be a missed opportunity if he doesn't get to sport the Black Suit soon.
Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on Dec. 17, 2027.
