What you need to know

Don’t call it “Avengers 2.5,” even though this will be the largest cast of Marvel heroes ever to grace the screen together to date. Loosely based on the Civil War comic book series from a decade ago, the film version will play with similar themes of government oversight and responsibility for the actions of superheroes while using different events to set the Avengers against each other.

But again, this is a Captain America movie, so we should see Evans get the most screen time as Steve Rogers. He’ll be dealing with his continuing hunt for his old friend and partner Bucky Barnes, once lost to his identity as the Winter Soldier but now possibly redeemable. From all indications, Cap’s support of Bucky could actually make things worse between him and Iron Man, who will head up the opposite side of the conflict.

Naturally, someone will be pulling the strings, whether it’s Helmut Zemo or Thunderbolt Ross — yes, the same character from The Incredible Hulk, reminding us once again that everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is connected. There will also be the much anticipated debuts of Black Panther and the shared Marvel/Sony version of Spider-Man, though it remains to be seen how big a role the wall-crawler will have.

If anyone can hold all of these elements together, it should be the Russo brothers. Consider this good practice for their work on Avengers: Infinity War, a movie that should have an even larger cast.
