My introduction to Benjamin Percy came during the X-Men Krakoa Era when he was writing Wolverine and X-Force. Since then, if his name was on a title, I was all in. Since then, he’s written Hellverine, Red Hulk, and four titles of 20th Century Fox’s Predators fighting Marvel Comics characters. All of which have been great stories highlighting his brutal writing style. It makes sense that he’d be on the creative team for the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool. However, as dark as things have gotten for Wade, we could be looking at something that surpasses anything fans have seen.
TRIGGER WARNING! This article will discuss things like self-harm. If you need help, call 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or follow this link.
Wade Wilson: Deadpool No. 1 starts with drug smugglers preparing to load their product into cows. Wade infiltrates their operation by hiding inside one of the bovines and then proceeds to slaughter everyone. Neither the way he hid nor how he defeated anyone was shocking. It’s what he does and why he’s paid to do it. What seemed out of the ordinary was how he went out of his way to let the people hurt him. And it wasn’t just when he was on the job. After getting his payment from Hammerhead, he asks to be shot.
Later, Blind Al says she understands why Deadpool begged to move in with her and that he was “lower than low.” She continues saying that Wade needs to find a better way to deal with his pain. Deadpool leaves, saying he has a romantasy book club to go to, when he really just couldn’t handle the conversation.
You’re probably wondering what could have happened to put Deadpool in this mood. Sure, he’s been depressed and self-harmed many times before, but this was different. If you’ve been reading any of the previous Deadpool titles by writers Cody Ziglar, Skottie Young, or Gerry Duggan, then you know that the only thing that could make him feel this awful is if it had something to do with his daughter Ellie Camacho.
Now, there is some good news. We don’t know what happened to Ellie, but I don’t think she’s dead. All readers see is her being dragged or falling into something with bright lights. And, at the end of the issue, someone is giving Wade hints that they know the future. If I had to guess, Ellie is in the timestream or the future and helping her dad. Does that mean she’ll return as a teenager, or will she be aged up like Cable when he was taken into the future?
