Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. says that Benedict Cumberbatch is in final negotiations to play Doctor Strange in the upcoming Marvel movie of the same name, bringing an end to a hunt that had numerous actors attached to the role of the Sorcerer Supreme. Cumberbatch is perhaps the highest profile actor of all the men linked to the movie at one point or another, and his casting has to be considered a coup for Marvel.
It’s also a possible sign that a bigger name was needed for a solo film about a character that most of the public has probably heard of but knows little about. Guardians of the Galaxy proved that Marvel is on enough of a hot streak to turn obscure characters into big bucks at the box office, but a little star power never hurts when attempting to repeat that success.
Marvel has an announcement of some sort scheduled for Tuesday, and if Cumberbatch is officially in the fold, Doctor Strange should be at least part of that. The movie is going to be directed by Scott Derrickson, and is expected to end up with a July 8, 2016 release.
