Who Makes A Surprise Return In Amazing Spider-Man #12?

We’ve seen tons of different variations on Spider-Man and Spider-Woman during Spider-Verse. Many are just alternate reality versions of Peter Parker, but plenty of them are different people altogether.

So far, the story has been a lively one, with all of the spiders from all over the multiverse banding together against the seemingly unstoppable threat of Morlun and the Inheritors. Not only are they powerful villains in their own right, this family of spider-hunters has cloning technology, so there’s literally no end to them. Slowly, though, the heroes are gaining the tools they need to fight back, including information and additional allies.

I’m stalling because I didn’t want the spoiler to Amazing Spider-Man #12 to be right up front. But ever since Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool alerted the world that the last page is a doozy, I knew there would be something interesting to talk about when the issue came out today.

Ready? Last warning, as I don’t want to ruin this for you if you’d rather find out the natural way.

That should be enough space. Anyway, with their safe zone no longer safe following the death of Cosmic Spider-Man, much of Amazing Spider-Man #12 involves a running battle against some of the Inheritors while Peter checks in with team members on various other worlds. Silk is supposed to be one of them, but she ends up on Earth-3145, which has been irradiated by a nuclear war. Happily, the radiation bothers the Inheritors even more than it does here, and she’s able to set out on her own.

She ends up going to that world’s version of the bunker in which Ezekiel kept her hidden from the Inheritors for years, only to find out that the spider totem of that world is alive and in the bunker already. When the main Peter and the rest of his team arrive, they’re stunned to find that the totem is …

I have to admit that not only did I not see this coming, it’s a twist that’s both logical and clever at the same time. It’s logical because we’ve already seen worlds where people close to Peter end up with spider-powers instead (Gwen Stacy, for one) and it’s clever because it allows Uncle Ben to be brought back, but only to serve the story. That means there won’t be the outrage that usually breaks out every time a long-dead character is resurrected.

Should be an interesting tale concerning how he’s still alive on a world where everyone else appears to be dead. Spider-Verse definitely hasn’t disappointed so far.
