Big Hero 6 Captures Best Animated Feature Oscar

Live action super hero movies didn’t get to take home any statues at the Academy Awards on Sunday night, but Disney’s animated team, loosely based on a Marvel comic of the same name, sure did.

Big Hero 6 was named Best Animated Feature, beating out How to Train Your Dragon 2, the Golden Globe winner in the same category, as well as The Boxtrolls, Song of the Sea and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. We’ll be left to wonder if it could have beaten out surprise omission The LEGO Movie, which pretty much everyone seemed to love, but it’s still a significant accomplishment for Disney.

That’s because the win makes two in a row for the House of Mouse after Frozen was named Best Animated Feature last year. Those were Disney’s first two traditional animated wins of this century, and after Pixar’s five in six years between 2007 and 2012, give it seven of the last eight trophies.

It’s also a bit of redemption for super hero fans, who saw Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which saw bids for Best Visual Effects (both films) and Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Guardians) fall short. A film about an actor who used to play a super hero did earn the evening’s most coveted honor, as Birdman was named Best Picture, though original film Batman Michael Keaton lost out in his nomination for Best Actor in the lead role.

Could next year be better for live action super hero movies? You have to figure Avengers: Age of Ultron will be in the mix for Best Visual Effects, so there’s at least a chance. In the meantime, if Disney wants to work on getting a good script together for a Big Hero 7, or Big Hero 6-2, or whatever, we’d be down for that.
