Report: Next Spider-Man Has Its Writer And Director

This is turning out to be quite the day for Spider-Man movie news and rumors, and this time, the source is quite a bit more solid.

The Latino Review continues its hustling, with writer Kellvin Chavez citing his face-to-face meeting with a source he calls Senor Fenix for news that Sony has picked a writer and director for its new Spider-Man movie. As luck would have it, they’re the same person: Drew Goddard.

“Wait,” you say. “Wasn’t Goddard busy working on The Sinister Six?” That was indeed the plan, but Senor Fenix claims the villain team-up movie is no more, freeing Goddard for Spider-Man while incorporating the “multiple bad guys teaming to stop Spidey” aspect into Spidey’s flicks.

Other interesting tidbits:

  • Sony might call the new Marvel-approved film “Spectacular Spider-Man.” Makes perfect sense, as “Amazing” is now a toxic reminder of the past, and “Spectacular” is also an adjective with a long history with Spidey in the comics.
  • It won’t be an origin story. If true, this would be the most welcome news of all. We’ve seen Peter Parker become a hero twice already this century. We’re not even two decades in. We don’t need to see it again. Also, while many super heroes need some recapping of their origins to ensure the non-comics crowd knows what the heck is going on, Spider-Man isn’t one of them. Everyone knows about the spider bite, Uncle Ben, power and responsibility, etc.
  • Dylan O’Brien hasn’t landed the role. Throwing shade at what he calls the “brave Reddit Warriors,” Latino Review’s source makes a point of saying he doubts the rumor of Dylan O’Brien’s casting is true, insinuating that he’s too old and unavailable. A younger unknown seems to be Senor Fenix’s bet.

There we go folks. Not as much sodium chloride needed for this one, since LR gets a lot of scoops, but it’s not official until Sony and/or Marvel say it is.
