Rumor: Mateus Ward Has Auditioned For Spider-Man
By Steve Lam
Rumors are firing up once more for Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latest news comes from Badass Digest and reveals that Hostages actor Mateus Ward has actually auditioned for the role of Peter Parker / Spider-Man. According to the site, he’s also the first candidate in serious consideration.
First things first. It seems that the rumor of character Miles Morales picking up the mantle of our favorite web-head will not be coming to fruition. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will be staying with good ole Peter Parker. A wise choice since most non-hardcore Spider-Man fans will be more familiar with the original character.
The meeting between Ward and the studio was said to be so secret that the young actor had to actually audition at someone’s house. Guess that attempt at stealthiness didn’t really work since we’re talking about it right now.
The age of the actor is also a giveaway as to Marvel’s plans for the future of Spider-Man in their universe. With Ward being only 16 years old, the studio is investing in some long term appearances for the character — I would think at least a decade.
The news of Ward’s audition comes off of weeks of speculation that Dylan O’Brien was being cast in the coveted role. Previous rumors also pointed to Logan Lerman being considered. But it seems that there was a real commitment in making this version of Spider-Man much younger.
Marvel and Sony are both in a hurry to introduce this new version of Spider-Man, as they want him to make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War (2016) — which is scheduled to start shooting in two weeks.
What do you think? Would Mateus Ward make a great Peter Parker?
