SDCC 2015 Studio Update: Warner Bros. In; Marvel, Sony Out; Fox Maybe
By Nick Tylwalk
For super hero fans, some of the highlights of any edition of Comic-Con International inevitably comes from the big panels and screenings in the fabled Hall H. That’s where many of the big super hero films of the past few years have received big jolts of publicity in the past, like when Marvel confirmed Josh Brolin as Thanos and officially announced Guardians of the Galaxy 2 last year.

Still, the Hall H slate this year, while not yet finalized with only a few weeks to go, is notable as much for who won’t be there as who will. Marvel is sitting out this year’s show, mostly because it has nothing to really trot out. Ant-Man doesn’t need a push considering it opens the week after Comic-Con, and Captain America: Civil War will still be shooting during SDCC week (and beyond). Casting hasn’t finished yet on Doctor Strange, and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still too far down the road.
Similarly, Sony still has its Spider-Man plans up in the air since the new wall-crawler it will share with Marvel still hasn’t been cast. Even if he was, there’s no footage to show from any upcoming movies.
So that’s half of the active super hero movie studios who won’t be at SDCC 2015. One who definitely will, and will no doubt enjoy having so much of the spotlight to itself, is Warner Bros. Look for big things from Hall H concerning both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, as both movies release next year.

As for Fox, which has the (hopefully) revived Fantastic Four and X-Men movie franchises to push, there’s no word just yet. It would be somewhat surprising to see the studio not take advantage of Marvel’s absence, and with X-Men: Apocalypse currently underway and Deadpool already in the can, there’s certainly an opportunity there in San Diego.
