By now, we can all agree that Fantastic Four will be placed on a certain “greatest” list that has the likes of Batman & Robin (1997), Daredevil (2003), Catwoman (2004), Ghost Rider (2007) and Green Lantern (2011) — The Greatest Superhero Film Flops list. What does this have to do with the title of this article? Well, Fox seems to have gotten that message and wants to cancel the planned sequel to Fantastic Four that’s set for June 9, 2017. In its place, the studio is going to slot in Deadpool 2. That’s the rumor that The Daily Superhero is currently reporting.
The rumor also goes on to reveal that Deadpool 2 will include Cable — something director Tim Miller originally joked about. Now, it seems that the studio really is considering pairing up the mutant with the Merc with a Mouth.
For now, all of this is just a rumor. But I would be hard-pressed to believe that Fox would still continue with a Fantastic Four sequel after its disastrous opening weekend. Having a budget of $120 million, the film opened with an embarrassing $11.3 million. Fox fast-tracking Deadpool 2 for a Summer 2017 release isn’t out of the realm of possibility. If they were to start filming in Spring 2016 or even Summer 2016, the film could still make a release date of June 9, 2017.
Since making its trailer debut and eventual leak onto the internet, Deadpool has been one of the most highly anticipated films. The Deadpool red-band trailer, which was released four days ago, has already surpassed 16 million views on YouTube with an almost solid blue bar (showing virtually universal approval).
Deadpool will be released on February 12, 2016. The film will be directed by Blur Films visual effects veteran Tim Miller, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and X-Men: Days of Future Past screenwriter Simon Kinberg. The cast includes Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson / Deadpool, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Ed Skrein as Ridge, Morena Baccarin as Copycat, aka Vanessa Carlysle, and Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
