The Flash: Killer Frost Not Happening Any Time Soon?

We might have seen Caitlin Snow as Killer Frost courtesy of Barry Allen’s visions while streaking through the time barrier last season on The Flash. We might have even heard Danielle Panabaker, who plays Caitlin, say that we’d be seeing her wielding some cold-based powers “very soon.” But plans change, and in the case of Killer Frost, they may have changed to ensure she won’t be arriving in the near future.

That’s the latest from Ms. Panabaker herself, who was a guest at Dragon Con earlier this month and answered some questions from the press there. One of them was a request for an update on Killer Frost, and she sang a slightly different tune this time around — but also gave an explanation as to why.

"Oh man, no one is more excited for Caitlin to become Killer Frost than I am. Unfortunately, I don’t know when that will happen. You know it’s hard, on the show the writers will say, “Oh, this is what’s going to happen, we’re looking forward to this, this is what we’re thinking,” and then as scripts evolve, sometimes things don’t make it into the scripts as soon as we would hope, and then sometimes we shoot things that don’t even make it into the show. I think our Season 1 finale ran something like 20 minutes long, so that’s like 20 minutes of stuff that they cut out of the storyline. Long story short, I am useless in terms of Killer Frost. I want it to happen very, very badly. Unfortunately, I don’t know that it’s happening anytime soon."

Panabaker also mentioned during the press conference that the cast was finished with six episodes of Season 2 and had received the script for a seventh. Assuming she’s not intentionally misleading us about Caitlin, that means we’re not getting a Killer Frost appearance during the first third of the season.

A more interesting question is why not, but it could be as simple as allowing more things to play out slowly. Barring some kind of unforeseen dip in quality, The Flash isn’t going anywhere, as it was the highest-rated series on The CW last season. Cisco Ramon has already experienced the beginning of his journey to becoming Vibe, so it’s possible the producers and writers didn’t see a need to rush something similar to Caitlin.

On top of that, it sounds as if Firestorm will be on Legends of Tomorrow more than The Flash this season. With that being the case, and Ronnie Raymond likely to play a big part in any subplot that involves Killer Frost, it could simply be a logistical necessity to hold off for the time being.

In any case, we’ve already seen that first glimpse thanks to the Fastest Man Alive, so it’s a question of “when” and not “if.” Though it might not be soon, keep an eye out for Killer Frost in case she arrives during Season 2, which begins on Tuesday, October 6.
