Warner Bros. already has plenty of DC super hero movies planned through 2020. How about one more?

According to The Tracking Board, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Citing sources exclusive to the site, it’s reporting that Warner is readying a Booster Gold/Blue Beetle team-up movie with Sarah Schechter as executive producer. The site also says Greg Berlanti will direct, which would be interesting for two reasons: one is that his plate is already plenty full with DC TV, and the other is that he’s only directed two feature films in his career.

What makes this report more believable is a comment made by DC’s Legends of Tomorrow showrunner Phil Klemmer back at Comic-Con. When asked why Booster Gold wasn’t going to be featured on the series since it has a time travel premise at its core, he suggested that maybe Booster “is being groomed for bigger things.”

A movie would certainly qualify on that count, and one would have to assume it would have a lighter tone than most of the upcoming DC fare. It might make for a savvy move to counter the drama of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the movies spinning out of that with something offering more comedic elements, and would prove that the supposed “no jokes” mantra in place for Warner’s super hero movies wouldn’t apply to everything.

In any case, a lot of comic book fans will be happy if this story pans out. A super hero buddy movie that is an action comedy sounds like just the ticket to give the DC film lineup some variety, and I’d love to see it. Umberto Gonzalez followed the original report with his own rumor at Heroic Holylwood that Zak Penn was being considered to write the script, so if the planning process is that far along, we should hear more on this front very soon.
