The Chris Evans saga continues, and this time, it’s taken a significant turn.

For the last few weeks, Chris Evans has been discussing whether or not he will continue to play Captain America following the fourth Avengers film. Some of his answers have left fans optimistic, while others have left them with feelings of uncertainty. Now, those feelings are likely to grow.

While promoting his latest film Gifted in a recent interview with USA Today, Evans continued to talk about what it would feel like to walk away from the role:

More from Movies

"“I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t be hard for me. But the passing of time and the passing of the torches is part of the experience. Nothing lasts forever. There’s a beauty in that departure, even if it can be sad at times. It’s also joyful.”"

It definitely sounds like he has mixed emotions about leaving. Evans also spoke on his belief that superheroes in particular are meant to change:

"“I’ve had a great run. Superheroes are reinventable entities, like Batman or even James Bond. These movies find new incarnations and new ways to tell the story. I am all for it. However they want to proceed after Avengers 4, it’s really up to them. I walk away with no regrets and endlessly thankful.”"

If you’re a massive Captain America or Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, this is definitely not what you want to hear. However, it’s hard to argue with either of his points.

An actor can only play a part for so long before it becomes tiring, and this particular role requires not only long months of filming, but also strenuous workout routines and lengthy press tours. He’s also right about superheroes. They are inevitably reimagined and recast for the big-screen. Just ask Batman and Spider-Man.
