Dragon Ball Super producer reveals why Master Roshi is involved in the “Universal Survival” saga.

Dragon Ball Super is gearing up for the Tournament of Power. The tournament will feature ten supreme competitors from multiple universes. The stakes are as high as they have ever been. The Omni-Kings have stated that the losing team’s universes will be eliminated. And the winning team will receive the lucrative Super Dragon Balls.

So it’s safe to say the tournament will feature the strongest competitors we’ve seen in Dragon Ball history. However, fans had one question when the promotional images were released a while ago: why is Master Roshi involved?

Roshi was old in the early days of Dragon Ball. So, 30 years later, Roshi is much older than “old.” But according to producer Hiroyuki Sakurada, Roshi’s involvement makes perfect sense.

Speaking with Mantan Web, Sakurada addressed fan confusion over Roshi’s involvement in the “Universal Survival” arc. He stated:

"“The Turtle Sennin is strong. Is [his strength] not like Kame or Krillin’s unique success?”"

Web admitted that Roshi did not keep up with the power inflation of Dragon Ball. So his strength will not be too different to his Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z days. He added that the tournament will feature various “activity centers” which will be suitable for certain fighters.

Web also added that it was Akira Toriyama’s idea to reintroduce Roshi. Perhaps Roshi will have an impace on the storyline. That’s why the creator wanted him involved.

It is worth noting that most Dragon Ball stories have stemmed from Goku helping his friends. And with Roshi being his master, he is a father figure to him. We have seen the other universes containing villainous characters, so perhaps they may use Roshi to their advantage. One thing is for sure, Goku and Roshi will have their hands full.
