More from Collectibles

For over 40 years, Eaglemoss has been specializing in pop culture memorabilia. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the company would delve into the world of comics. One of their most popular lines—the DC Comics Super Hero Collection—has made a recent comeback. So far, we’ve had the pleasure of reviewing three offerings from that line—Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Harley Quinn. Now, we have Poison Ivy.

Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Sheldon Moldoff, Poison Ivy made her first appearance in Batman #181 (June 1966). Like many early comic book characters, Poison Ivy wasn’t taken very seriously and had a very campy origin story. Throughout the years, the character was given a richer biographical sketch.

In DC Comics’ Post-Crisis stories, writer Neil Gaiman gave Poison Ivy a new origin story which still stands today. Pamela Lillian Isley is a research scientist who holds a doctorate in botanical biochemistry. Shy and timid, she’s seduced by her supervising professor, Dr. Jason Woodrue. With his own nefarious plans, Woodrue injects Isley with plant toxins as an experiment—giving her superhuman abilities and transforming her personality into a villainous seductress.

Eaglemoss has created an offering around this interesting super villain, and Bam Smack Pow has been fortunate enough to receive this collectible. So join us as we perform an unboxing and review.

The Unboxing

Currently, all Eaglemoss offerings come with a collectible box that’s custom designed to the theme of the character. Here, we have Poison Ivy in a unique pose on the front. A large window gives collectors a view of the figurine. On the sides, the character is depicted in her illustrated form along with a photograph of the figurine. The back shows the rest of Eaglemoss’s DC Comics Super Hero Collection line.

Removing the outer box, you’ll find the Poison Ivy figurine sandwiched between two pieces of molded plastic. The molded plastic can be easily separated and removed, as they’re not held together by an adhesive.

The Details

Part of Eaglemoss’s offering also includes a companion magazine which gives a rundown and biographical sketch of Poison Ivy’s history. It’s an interesting read, as the figurine now has a bit of history behind it. Poison Ivy is definitely one of Batman’s more compelling villains, and her motivations don’t always align with that of typical villains. In more complex stories, she can also be viewed as an anti-hero for the environment.

The Poison Ivy figurine is quite interesting in that it conveys a bit of movement. Her flowing hair and specific pose makes everything come alive. The sculpt is nicely detailed. Overall, it captures the super villain quite nicely. The bottom of the pedestal contains DC Comics’ official seal and numbering, lending a note of authenticity to the figurine.

Eaglemoss mixes it up a bit and gives the spotlight to one of Batman’s most formidable foes—Poison Ivy. Though the character has been one of the most interesting villains, she’s been neglected quite a bit in collector realms. It’s great to see such a complex character getting the respect she deserves from Eaglemoss.

If you’re still on the fence, the $4.95 is pretty much a risk-free trial. You can cancel at any time. However, I doubt any collector will. You can check out Eaglemoss’s official DC Super Hero Collection website to see how you can get started on a subscription today.
