Josh Brolin was surprised at how deep Thanos is
By Erik Swann
Josh Brolin discovered that Thanos is a deep and complex character in Avengers: Infinity War.
Avengers: Infinity War will pit Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against the Mad Titan, Thanos. The ominous villain has had a minimal presence in the MCU up to this point, but audiences finally got to see him in action in the first footage from the film at Disney’s D23 Expo. While the footage did showcase his brute force, Josh Brolin thinks there’s a lot more to the character than his muscles.
While talking to Good Morning America, Brolin explained that Thanos is just as much a threat mentally as he is physically:

"“The thing with Thanos that you don’t understand is that [there are] times where it can become psychological and not necessarily brute force.”"
The actor also revealed he was surprised at just how much depth and emotion the character has:
"“It’s a really smart movie. He’s a smart character. I had no idea, in all truth. I had no idea, when I did the teaser, we had like thirty-six cameras or something. And I sat on a seat, and it wasn’t working with anybody. And now, being actually involved and interacting [with] the potpourri of characters that are in. It’s way more emotional and interactive than I thought. It’s a lot of fun. And a lot deeper than I thought, and a lot more emotional.”"

Comic book fans who’ve read Jim Starlin’s work know Thanos is a layered villain with specific motivations for his actions. With both Avengers films staying very close to Starlin’s Infinity War series, it’s safe to assume we’ll see a method to Thanos’ madness.
Avengers: Infinity War lands in theaters on May 4, 2018, while the Untitled Avengers Sequel arrives on May 3, 2019.
