Dysfunctional and dangerous relationship

Batman: The Animated Series introduced Harley Quinn to fans decades ago. The creators made Harley to serve the Joker. She was his lover and the Robin to his Batman.  For Gotham City and Batman, they were a dangerous, unstable dynamic duo, but it was layered beyond that. Their relationship was complex and one of the most dysfunctional relationships ever depicted in any comic book series.

No matter how much she was meant to play the secondary role, Harley was captivating. As Harley grew into her own, DC dug deeper into her mythos. Over the course of the series, we learned a lot about the wild and quirky villain. The comics, animated series and animated films further explored their relationship. We learned Harley was a victim of abuse and suffered from dependability. Moreover, Joker verbally abused and neglected her.

If there’s anything we expect to see from the film, it’s the true depiction of their relationship. And, two mentally messed up people in a relationship doesn’t end well. So, there has to be more to this than a romanticized version of an abusive relationship. In order for Harley to become the strong independent anti-villain comic fans fell in love with, she has to do one thing – leave the Joker.
