Uncanny X-Men No. 11 review: Cyclops and Wolverine are back!

Cyclops and the terrible, horrible, no good, VERY bad return in the latest issue of Uncanny X-Men.

Previously, in Uncanny X-Men No. 10, “Disassembled”, the X-Men made their final stand against X-Man. They fought as hard as they could, but to no avail. X-Man won and killed all of the X-Men that tried to fight him. After everything X-Man did, the governments of the world were tired of dealing with mutants and went forward with the anti-mutant vaccine plans. On top of all this, the issue ended with Cyclops returning from the dead after several years (find out how he returned right here).

Cyclops is officially back from the dead, and things look terrible for him and mutant kind. The trials for the anti-mutant vaccine are almost ready to be disbursed, and there are no mutants to be found. Cyclops was told by Blindfold (in her normal cryptic way) that nothing would ever be the same again. She also told him to stop doing what he was doing. Cyclops still attempts to try, but keeps hitting dead ends.

Jamie Madrox finds Cyclops drunk in a room shooting alcohol bottles with his optic blast. He tells him that all the mutants were either, in jail, underground, or dead. Cyclops would accept that. He visited the Morlocks (and their leader and former X-Man, Chamber), who are upset that he started a war and died. Even Ben Urich wouldn’t take an interview from him. Jamie Madrox finds Blindfold and gives the info to Cyclops. Jamie warns him to stay away saying, “Nothing good came from Scott Summers being involved.” Harsh words, but they come true. Cyclops finds Blindfold dead in a bathtub with, “This is forever” written in blood on the wall.

Things continue to get worse as the issue continues. There’s a woman running for a government office that’s suggesting that mutants being neutered isn’t enough. She wants them killed. Cyclops steps in asking questions, including the number of mutants the government has killed. This incites a riot in the rally and leads to Cyclops getting beaten up. To avoid getting killed, he unleashes his optic blast. Thankfully, Captain America shows up to stop things from escalating further.

Cyclops isn’t happy to see him. He’s pissed off that all of this anti-mutant stuff is happening, and Captain America hasn’t done anything. However, as Cyclops pointed out, Cap said he wishes he could have done more. Cyclops takes this opportunity to talk to the world as the cameras were rolling. He tells any X-Men listening to meet him in two days where it all began and that he needs them.

Cyclops waits for his former X-Men at the location where their school was destroyed. Instead of the X-Men, he gets the Reavers, Purifiers, and the Sapian league all looking for a chance to kill him. Donald Pierce asks how it feels to know the world doesn’t care he’s going to die alone. Then, Cyclops’ luck turns around. A mysterious voice says, “He ain’t alone,” and then we see the familiar “snikt” sound effect and Wolverine appears saying, “This is gonna be fun.” They make short work of their enemies. Cyclops says, “Logan” Wolverine says, “Slim,” and they stare at each other for a second before Wolverine says, “Now that we’re all caught up, let’s go. We got work to do.”

dark. Next. Wolverine’s hot claws and cosmic powers are a good idea

X-Marks the spot

  • How are the Avengers going to react to Cyclops being back? Despite Cyclops’ reaction to Cap, they may react positively, especially since they’re also on the outs with the U.S. Government.
  • Are Cyclops and Wolverine going to hash out their issues or was that it? Hopefully, it ends like the issue ended. It was perfect.
  • What villains will be first in line to take their shot at the X-Men? There must be dozens of groups lining up to try to kill them?
  • Will the Morlocks try to attack the X-Men once they’re assembled? They weren’t exactly happy with Cyclops being back.
  • Am I the only one who’s glad Cyclops finally shaved? Just a thought.
