Nova could be one step closer to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is almost here and, with it, will come new heroes like the Eternals and Shang-Chi. With Marvel trying to add to its roster of characters, there’s one hero fans have wanted on the big screen for a while, Nova. And it looks like the cosmic Avenger may indeed be on his way.

According to a report from MCU Cosmic, Marvel Studios has begun development on a Nova film. While the source of the news has proven reliable in the past, the trade stresses that this should be treated as a rumor, at this point.

This isn’t the first time Marvel Studios has expressed interest in this property. Last year, studio president Kevin Feige has mentioned that the character has great potential. There have also been seeds planted for him in the MCU already, as the Nova Corps was first introduced back in Guardians of the Galaxy.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

There have been two major incarnations of Nova, the first being Richard Rider. He first appeared in the pages of The Man Called Nova in 1976. Originally a high school student in New York, Rider was chosen to join the Nova Corps by the dying Rhomann Dey. As one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, Nova has super strength, speed, and enhanced durability. He can also fly and open up wormholes.

The second version of the character is a young, Latino named Sam Alexander, who made his comic book debut in 2011. Unlike Rider, Sam has heroic lineage, as his father was a Nova Centurion. And after taking his dad’s old helmet and helping to defeat an invading Chitauri fleet, he establishes himself as a superhero. In addition, he also becomes friendly with Richard Rider.

It’s hard to predict which version of the character Marvel Studios will go with. They could do an origin story with Richard Rider. But on the other hand, doing a passing of the torch story – like in Ant-Man – with Sam and Richard could also work. Regardless, it would be good to have the gold-helmeted hero in the MCU.
