Deception and the death of Dark Beast in Uncanny X-Men No. 20

The X-Men learn more about what’s been going on under their noses.

The X-Men have been going through it. We recently found out that Emma Frost erased the minds of the X-Men and that she and the Hellfire Club are working for the U.S. Government. We also learned that the Captain America that Cyclops met at Harry’s Hideout wasn’t actually Steve Rogers. But what we didn’t know was what else was going on, and things go even deeper than that.

Dark Beast had been working on a cure for the mutant vaccine that was preventing certain children from becoming mutants (Uncanny X-Men No 10). Dark Beast told the X-Men he created a cure, and they  all took a vote on what to do with it, ultimately deciding to administer it. All it needed was to be dropped airborn in a few places. Unfortunately, they discovered the side effects too late. If a child was given the vaccine, their organs are sent into overdrive, which sends them into a coma.

If you’re wondering why the X-Men trusted Dark Beast, you can thank Mr. Sinister for that. With no telepaths on the team to protect their minds, Sinister gave the X-Men a little suggestion to cooperate with Dark Beast. Thankfully, he got what was coming to him. Illyana Rasputin killed him by teleporting Dark Beast’s head into the ceiling, but another mutant was killed, as well. The story ends with Emma losing her “deal” with Robert Callahan and being captured. She telepathically contacts Cyclops and gives him his memories of her back. She also apologizes and says, “I need the X-Men!”

We shouldn’t be shocked by any of this. First of, we knew Dark Beast was up to something, and Mr. Sinister giving up so easy was suspicious. Both of them working together was shocking, but not surprising. They both share similar ideals: experimentation first and humanity last. The biggest shocker was Wolverine getting caught by the government. Even outnumbered, Logan can fight the odds. This time, however, they were prepared. Looks like Cyclops may have to return the favor and save him.

X-Marks the Spot

  • Will Cyclops be able to talk the X-Men into helping Emma Frost? They won’t be happy with how she’s been helping the government capture mutants. And even if they do help her, what’s next?
  • What is Mr. Sinister’s plan? It has to be more than just curing mutants. He doesn’t help anyone without an ulterior motive. He probably just needs more mutants to experiment on.
  • Now that Steve Rogers knows the X-Men were being tricked, what’s next? Will the Avengers have to arrest them or help?
  • Where are Kwannon and Mystique? They both disappeared after their fight.
  • Who will be the next mutant to die? It seems like we lose at least one every issue. This issue, the Nasty Boys and Dark Beast were killed.
  • Is Emma Frost tricking Cyclops? She’s a selfish person, and it’s in her nature to use personal feelings to get what she wants. She could be trading Cyclops for her freedom.
