In a mass amount of announcements, HBO Max revealed it is developing DC Super Hero High with Elizabeth Banks set to be the executive producer for the series.

WarnerMedia Day brought about a lot of new TV series for HBO Max, the new streaming service set to launch next year. One series that was announced was DC Super Hero High. Elizabeth Banks is set to be the executive producer for the comedy series.

Deadline gives a brief plot synopsis for the series:

"Banks, who produced Shrill on Hulu, is set to executive produce DC Super Hero High, a half-hour comedy that follows a group of students experiencing the fun and drama of adolescence at a boarding school for gifted kids. These teens are just trying to navigate the pressures of high school, but none of them realize that someday they will become legendary DC superheroes."

This appears to be a live-action adaptation of DC Super Hero Girls, a franchise where Warner Bros. sells action figures and has created a web series. The series initially began with a series of shorts on YouTube alongside direct-to-video movies. DC Super Hero Girls was then rebooted by Lauren Faust, creator of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, into a TV series that continues to run to this day.

The idea of a younger group of superheroes attending school works for an animated TV show. DC Super Hero Girls is fun and light-hearted and has the main objective of selling toys to children.

Adapting a series like this for live-action brings about a lot of questions. How large will the cast be? Will the series have free reign over all of the characters in the DC Universe?

For reference, Wonder Woman is the biggest star from DC Super Hero Girls. Batman and Superman are mentioned, but their supporting characters (Robin, Batgirl and Supergirl) get more of a spotlight.

It will be interesting to see which characters are chosen for DC Super Hero High and who will be working on the series along with Banks. Charlie’s Angels is set to come out soon, but Pitch Perfect 2 is a good showcase of the potential DC Super Hero High will have with Banks showing an ability to create a successful teen comedy.

The show will be on HBO Max, but there are not a lot of details on what the budget for DC Super Hero High will be or what restrictions the show will have in terms of mature content. Perhaps Elizabeth Banks will reveal more during her press tour promoting Charlie’s Angels.
