‘Captain Marvel 2’ gets WandaVision writer and release date

A Captain Marvel sequel is officially in the works, and it has a writer and a release date.
A sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel is officially a go at Marvel Studios, according to THR. The studio has also enlisted WandaVision‘s Megan McDonnell to write the film. McDonnell will take over writing duties from Nicole Perlman, Meg LeFauve, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
Speaking of the directors, the trade’s sources tell them the duo won’t return for the sequel but will remain with Marvel to helm another project like a Disney Plus series. The studio is reportedly aiming to hire a female director for the job. As of right now, Captain Marvel 2 is set to be released in 2022, placing it alongside Black Panther 2.
Plot details are currently scarce, but the sequel will be contemporary, a shift from the 1990s setting of the original. Carol Danvers was last seen aiding Earth’s Mightiest Heroes during the events of Avengers: Endgame.

The twenty-second installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the franchise’s first female-led feature, Captain Marvel was originally announced in the fall of 2014, with Brie Larson’s casting as the titular character following in 2016. The movie opened to positive reviews and financial success, grossing over $1.1 billion by the end of its theatrical run.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige casually mentioned a Captain Marvel sequel being in development during last summer’s San Diego Comic-Con. This further confirmation and release date would seem to indicate that it will be a part of MCU Phase Five. And coincidentally, while WandaVision has not been confirmed to have ties to this film, it will feature a Captain Marvel character in the form of Monica Rambeau, who will now be an adult played by Teyonah Parris.
Captain Marvel 2 joins Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Spider-Man 3 and Ant-Man 3 as a sequel currently scheduled beyond the Phase Four slate.
