Birds of Prey: 6 characters who deserve their own spinoff
3. Lady Shiva
Birds of Prey gave us our first look at one of DC Comics’ most beloved Batgirls, no not Barbara Gordon — Cassandra Cain. While Cassandra wasn’t anything like her comic book counterpart, there’s a history that could be explored. Birds of Prey didn’t mention her birth parents, which means there’s no reason to believe Lady Shiva isn’t her mother. In case you need the backstory on DC’s greatest assassin; here’s a little refresher.
Sandra Wu-San and her sister, Carolyn, fled the village they were born to protect and landed in Detroit, in the hopes of a better life. They’d often spar against one another, and their talents ultimately gained the attention of David Cain, who was also a member of the League of Assassins.

Cain murdered Carolyn in hopes to unlock Sandra’s potential and gain her affection. She’d vow revenge and hunt him down. Cain spared her life, and she bore him a child, Cassandra. After giving birth, she left Cassandra, who had been raised by David, in the league. Sandra eventually became Lady Shiva – a mercenary for hire and the world’s greatest assassin.
A movie could opt to merge two versions of Lady Shiva’s life. The film a revenge story that picks up after David Cain frames Richard Dragon. Shive could hunt down Dragon after spending time with David in the League, honing her skills for years and even giving birth to her daughter. She would then eventually discover the truth: the man she loves had her sister killed. Not only that, but the child she birthed will be forced to be nothing more than a weapon for the League.
A heartbreaking tale no doubt that could lead to Shiva fleeing the League and putting Cassandra up for adoption — directly setting up Cassandra’s situation in Birds of Prey. Lady Shiva could then make her return in a future DCEU film after learning Cassandra is being hunted by the League of Assassins.
