As part of Variety’s Actors on Actors show, Henry Cavill expressed his wish to continue playing the Man of Steel, Superman in the future.

Rumours have been running wild about the future of Henry Cavill as Superman for some time now. After debuting in Man of Steel in 2013, Cavill has had only two more turns as the boy in blue since.

In 2019, word got out that Cavill’s run as the character was officially over, but those rumours have been in dispute for a while. Now, Cavill has revealed that whatever the fates may have in store for him, he still has his heart set on playing Superman again in DC Extended Universe.

While speaking to Sir Patrick Stewart on Variety’s Actors on Actors @ Home, Cavill talked about how playing the comic book character has changed his life.

Cavill is a huge geek as has been revealed on his social media platforms. He has also been a big fan of Superman and when he was first cast in the role, he was extremely excited to play the character.

In the interview, Cavill talked about being incredibly happy about stepping into the boots of Superman. And, because the character is “so good… so kind”, that it has impacted how he behaves off set as well. Cavill feels that when you’re playing an icon like the last son of Krypton, you end up asking yourself if you’re a good enough person to play this role. He tries to modify his behaviour accordingly. Cavill’s sentiments echo those of Chris Evans, who has also stated in several interviews that playing Steve Rogers has made him re-think his actions in the real world.

Superman is also very recognizable to fans, especially children, and Cavill mentions that he feels its important to carry on Clark Kent’s virtuous persona in his “public representation”. He then added that he’s happy to have such a responsibility and that he hopes that he gets “to play more of Superman in years to come”.

Cavill’s turn as the character has been divisive, more so because of the quality of the productions he’s been part of. Some of Clark Kent’s DCEU actions have been debatable ever since 2013.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice was mostly a box office hit but a critical disaster, and Cavill’s reduced screen-time and the film’s poor performance didn’t help either. His final appearance as the character was in Justice League, where most of his scenes were hampered by mustache-gate.

Now that the Snyder cut of Justice League is scheduled to release on HBO Max, one can hope that Cavill’s Superman will be given a new lease on life and that he has the opportunity to play the character again.
