X of Swords: What is the Muramasa Blade and how is it connected to Wolverine?
By Mark Lynch
What is the Muramasa Blade, how did Wolverine create it and why is it important?
The X-Men have always had some of the best crossovers. Mostly because their events don’t involve the entire Marvel Comics universe. This year, the X-Men’s crossover is X of Swords.
If this writer can be honest, it didn’t look appealing at first. The X-Men with the swords promos looked cool, but how far could they go with this? However, after issue No. 1, it’s easy to see that this could be another win for Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants – especially since it’s going to be a fight between the X-Men and Apocalypse’s kids.
Towards the end of the issue, each side named their swords. Among them was Muramasa. The blade that was created by the legendary sword-maker Muramasa for and from Wolverine.
What is the Muramasa Blade?
Before Wolverine was a member of the X-Men, his life was being manipulated by Romulus – a being that claims to have been running the world in the shadows since the days of cavemen.
When Wolverine was in Japan, Romulus had Bucky Barnes kill Logan’s wife to be while she was pregnant with their son. Infuriated, Wolverine went looking for revenge. This led him to Muramasa.
When he met him, Muramasa told Logan that he’d been waiting for him. He said he’d take what was in Wolverine and turn it into a blade and Muramasa meant it literally. He took Wolverine’s blood and rage and made it into a sword. It wasn’t just what it was made of, it was what it could do.
What is the Muramasa Blade capable of?
The Muramasa Blade is capable of killing anything and anyone – even those with a healing factor. When Logan went on his mission for redemption, the first thing he did was retrieve his sword from Muramasa. After Muramasa gave it to him, he told Wolverine to wield it like an angry god. And he did.
Along the way, he used the blade to kill Omega Red, Sabretooth (a clone) and stopped his son Daken from becoming the new Romulus. After he finished, he buried the sword so no one could use it again.

Like most powerful weapons, the Muramasa Blade wasn’t going to stay buried forever. Polaris mentioned Muramasa first for a reason. Grasscutter and Godkiller were forged by gods and the Soul Sword was made in Limbo. All three of them are created with some sort of magic involved. The Muramasa Blade was made from Wolverine’s blood and rage. That should tell you what’s going on inside of Wolverine’s body. It’s on the list with weapons that were created to kill gods.
Hopefully this won’t be a situation where the blade was brought up only to be taken out of commission immediately. It wouldn’t be shocking. Wolverine is sometimes used as a stepping stone to show how powerful someone is.
We could also be looking at Wolverine’s death. The Muramasa Blade could be used against him since it’s one of the few things that can put him down permanently. If it wasn’t for the resurrection protocols no one would be surprised. If this does happen, look for Wolverine to reclaim his sword and kill the person who slayed him.
