MCU: Doctor Strange to reunite with Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3

When it seemed like there could be no more surprises regarding the MCU’s upcoming third Spider-Man film, in pops Doctor Strange out of a portal to surprise us once again.

In a report from The Hollywood Reporter, it appears that Benedict Cumberbatch, as Doctor Strange obviously, will be joining the cast of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 3 in a very specific role.

According to THR’s report he will be serving as the mentor figure in this film, a role which was served by Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Nick Fury, Mysterio, and Happy in Spider-Man: Far from Home. This would mark the second time that Strange and Spider-Man would have meaningful scenes together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after their interactions with each other in Avengers: Infinity War.

Will Spider-Man 3 kick off the MCU’s Spider-Verse?

This is not the only casting news of late regarding Spider-Man 3 as it was revealed last week that Jamie Foxx would be reprising his role of Electro for the upcoming film. Speculation then ensued about whether or not he would be playing the same version of the character (who died) that appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

However, Foxx stated that Electro in the upcoming film would not be blue, so it seemed like it would be a different version of the character. With Doctor Strange now involved in the film though, this could be a deliberate misdirect by Foxx as his version of Electro could be brought over through the Multiverse. The likelihood of this is low though and it’s more than likely Foxx is telling the truth about being a new version of Electro.

Back to Doctor Strange. Even though THR is reporting that Cumberbatch is joining the film, they also state that it’s unclear when he will film his scenes. Spider-Man 3 is set to start shooting in Atlanta next month while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to shoot this month in London. As this is Marvel Studios and Sony we’re talking about though, they have the money and resources to absolutely figure out a way to pull it off.
